Welcome / Introduction
Mr. Brian Ritz
• This is my 10th year teaching at Gurney.
• I graduated from Ohio University.
• I also received my masters degree from
Ashland University.
• I currently live in Mentor.
• I’ve enjoyed the school year so far!
Responsive Classroom
• Rules and Logical Consequences: We have created our
“Hopes and Dreams” for our classroom. (Academic and
Social)
• Our classroom rules: P- Pride, R- Responsible, I- In control,
D- Don’t quit, E- Encourage others.
• Take a Break Desk: 1. Verbal warning 2. Student sent to
take a break desk to reflect on why he/she is there.
• Compliments: Everyone in the class works together to reach
their goal and earn a compliment party.

• Morning Meeting- 1. Greeting 2. Sharing 3. Whole
Group Activity 4. Morning Message.
• Language also plays a big role- our teacher
language shows that we believe that students can
and will make the right choices; it tells them we
see and notice what they do (“I see…I
notice…Show me..”

We are using Literacy By Design for reading but I will supplement.
The program includes reading comprehension, reading fluency,
vocabulary, written expression, oral language skills, and listening
skills.
Literacy By Design connects literature content to our science and
social studies topics.
Writing – Personal narrative (sports), research project, persuasive
piece.
Word Study – Group sorts now but will switch to “just right”
groups later in the year.
Math Envisions
• Math Envisions aligns with the common-core
standards.
• Internet pieces with interactive videos and
slideshows.
• We will supplement Math Envisions to meet the
needs of your children.
• We will be switching for math with the other 3rd
grade teachers based on pre-test scores from
each concept.

Parent Involvement
• Volunteers- If we need a volunteer in the
classroom for an activity I will send out a
email/letter.
• At home…. 1) Please look for take home
folders everyday from your child. 2) Child
can be responsible for snack, being ready
for specials, and homework.
