CINAHL with Full Text
Basic Searching
Tutorial
support.ebsco.com
Welcome to EBSCO’s Basic Searching tutorial, featuring CINAHL with Full Text, the world’s most
comprehensive source of full text for nursing and allied health journals. In this tutorial, you will
learn how to perform a basic keyword search.
We’ll begin by conducting a basic keyword search on the Advanced Search screen. Enter diabetic
foot in the Find field. CINAHL with Full text features Search Modes as well as several limiters
and expanders to help with your searching. Check the Full Text limiter to restrict results to those
including full text only.
You can also search within the full text of the articles and citation fields by placing a check in the box
next to the expander Also search within the full text of the articles. Click Search to view a Result
List of all articles that contain your term in one of the citation fields.
Your results are displayed. Under Refine your results, you can use the date slider to narrow your results
by date. Just drag either end of the slider towards the middle and click Update Results. You can also
refine your results even further by clicking the Show More link found to the right of the Update button.
When you click on Show More, all available limiters and expanders are displayed. You can deselect
limiters that you ran on your search or add additional limiters or expanders. In this example, we will
add the Evidence-Based Practice limiter and click Search to rerun the search.
The updated result list is displayed. In this example, we have focused the search down to fewer
relevant articles.
Searching for subject terms can also be useful. The CINAHL Editorial staff has assigned subject
terms based on article content, resulting in more relevant results when you click the Suggest Subject
Terms box above the Find field, prior to conducting a search. Check the Suggest Subject Terms box,
then enter diabetic foot in the Find field, and click Search.
You can also click on the CINAHL Headings link along the top toolbar to browse for appropriate
subject terms. For more information on searching using subject headings, see the “Using
CINAHL/MeSH Headings” tutorial on the EBSCO Support Site.
The Result List may include links to source types, such as CEUs (continuing education unit modules),
Research Instruments, and Search Strategies. Some articles include full text in both PDF and HTML
formats which, when opened, can be printed, emailed, saved to your computer, or exported.
FOLDERS: Click on the Add to folder link to collect results in the (temporary) session folder.
To save results beyond the current session, log in to My EBSCOhost and either create a free
folder account, or sign in to an existing folder account.
At any time, click on the Help link to view the complete online help system.
