Current Status of the WMA
• Komati and Sabie/Sand catchments water
security currently acceptable
• Crocodile under water stress (shortages of 160
million m3 per year) due to:
– Available water already allocated according to
previous Water Act
– Growth in Municipal water use
• Major growth in industrial and housing projects
• Inefficiency of water use within municipalities
– Higher demands from Mozambique regarding
minimum flows at border
• Water stress – huge risk for agriculture & other
sectors

Research Institutions
• Rhodes University
• Development of Water Quality Management Framework
• Developed a stakeholder platform for sharing interests on
a common pool and planning together to achieve common
interest.
• Developed a model to determine the waste load against
interim water quality objectives and currently in the testing
phase.
• The model will assist transparent and collective decision
making as stakeholders for stakeholder’s collective
benefit.
• It has brought diverse stakeholders together to manage
water quality.

INKOMATI CATCHMENT MANAGEMENT AGENCY
Research Institutions
• Wits University
• Developed a stakeholder centred public participation process
based on strategic adaptive management.
• This platform encourages buy-in and consensus by
stakeholders on matters relating to the protection of water
resources as a common pool resource.
• UKZN
– RISKOMAN: Operational Governance Dashboard, Adaptive
Operational River Management Framework.
• PSP - Development and implementation of pro-active acid mine
drainage strategy.
• Pro-active AMD task team has been established with buy in
from stakeholders (mining houses, authorities and NGOs).
• Sharing of information from various mining houses - prevention
of mining related pollution, and plans to address decants.
