How Moisture Affects the Growth of
Mold on Bread.
Presentation by, Peter Stone, Ryan
Melia, and Tim Padden.
Background Info.
 We are testing for
mold.
 Mold is a type of fungi.
 In this experiment we
hope to find out how
the amount of water
affects the rate of mold
growth.
Experimental Design.
Hypothesis:
 Bread w/ most water will grow
mold at a faster pace with more
mold.
IV: Moisture level
0 drops. 5 drops. 10 drops
12 days 12 days 12 days.
DV:Mold growth.
Constants:
 Temperature
 Light condition.
 Water amount.
 Type of bread.
 Amount of oxygen.
 Same liquid, water.
The Procedure
 Get three pieces of bread, place
on table.
 Get three plastic bags, label
according to amount of water
added.
 Get beaker and fill with water.
 Fill eye dropper with water.
 Drop correct amount of water on
each piece of bread.
 Place bread in plastic bag.
 Push air out of bag, seal bag and
put in dark area.
Tim and Ryan hard at work.
Day One.
 Day one, no water had
been added.
 We used the same type
of bread, (white bread)
throughout the
experiment.
Day Twelve
Zero drops of water. No
changes from day one.
Five drops of water. Mold
growth beginning.
Ten drops of water. Major
growth begins.
The End Result
 From this experiment
we can conclude:



The more water the
more mold growth.
The more water the
faster the mold
growth
The type of mold is
rhizopus.
Here is one piece of mold under a
microscope.
We found that the mold grew in clusters.
What Is Rhizopus?
 Rapid growth
 Common on breads.
 dry, easily airborne
spores.
 Any of various rotcausing fungi of the
genus.
Suggestions
For doing this experiment
again we would
change:
 Take more pictures.
 Try putting in a no
oxygen zone.
 Exposing to light.
We hope you enjoyed our presentation, we would like to take this time to
answer and of your questions.
