The Water Cycle
PROPERTIES OF WATER
• It is a POLAR MOLECULE: H atoms have a
positive charge / O atoms have a negative
charge
• It sticks to itself: COHESION
• It sticks to other substances: ADHESION
• It can absorb large amounts of energy:
SPECIFIC HEAT
• It dissolves many things:
UNIVERSAL SOLVENT
WATER CYCLE
• Water NEVER leaves the Earth.
• It is constantly being CYCLED through the
atmosphere, ocean, and land.
• This process, driven by energy from the SUN.
The Water Cycle
EVAPORATION
Sun heats up liquid water and changes it to a gas.
Water vapor will rise up into the atmosphere
TRANSPIRATION
The process of evaporation from
plants (it’s like plants sweating.)
CONDENSATION
As WATER VAPOR rises it will cool and become
a LIQUID again. CLOUDS WILL FORM.
PRECIPITATION
When the water in the clouds gets too heavy,
the water falls back to the earth.
GROUNDWATER: When rain falls on the land,
some of the water is absorbed into the ground.
RUNOFF: Water that collects in rivers, streams,
and oceans from precipitation.
