Online Resources at
Government Websites
Using the Internet and Library
catalogs
US Government Resources
The following are indispensable for SJSU Journalism students:
Power Reporting http://powerreporting.com/
Government Agencies: http://www.lib.lsu.edu/gov/fedgov.html
Government Publications Office (GPO) Access: gpoaccess.gov
To reach the King Library’s Government Publications page:
http://www.sjlibrary.org/research/databases/sguide_subjectList.htm?s
ubID=30
US Government Resources
From SJSU Research pages: http://www.cdc.gov/.
The CDC website offers information about a wide range of health
and safety topics. Topics include disease and preventive care,
workplace safety, environmental health, data and statistics, and
more. CDC also offers links to many of its publications and
information about its policies towards the media.
Journalism students should note that:

There are a lot of government sub-agencies

Observing how the sub-agencies fit in with the other Federal
agencies can help direct ones research.
Social Security Online
US Government Resources
US Social Security Administration
www.ssa.gov.
This is an invaluable resource for 150 million Americans, their
families and all wager earners
Online access makes it possible now for anyone to look up
and calculate their Social Security benefit at the age they may
wish to start collecting it. The website also outlines the
penalty formulas for wages earned while collecting Social
Security during the years before one’s full benefit age.
U.S. Department of Defense
US Government Resources
US Department of Defense
From SJSU Research pages: http://www.defenselink.mil/.
This is a resource for millions of Americans and their families
who now are in the military, are considering the idea of joining
and want further information about career opportunities and
benefits available, or who just want to get general information
about the Defense Department.
(Note: researchers should always be aware of bias in the content of all
websites, but perhaps particularly in politically charged sites such as
this one)
Department of Water Resources
State Government Resources
California State Department of Water
Resources
http://www.water.ca.gov/
If you are writing a story about the politics of California’s water, here
you can get basic information, in gallons and acre-feet, about the way
the State manages water resources and watershed lands.
http://reporter.umd.edu/
“A Journalist’s Guide to the Internet” is a great place to find
information concerning the back story about who gets precious water
resources and what groups want or need more water.
http://www.stateline.org/live/
Stateline is a non-profit and non-partisan project of the Pew
Charitable Trusts. The website was originally created as a resource
site for reporters covering state governments which remains its primary
purpose.
Superior Court of Alameda
Local Government Resources
Alameda County Court System
http://www.alameda.courts.ca.gov/courts/
Through this website a variety of important information can be
accessed. The court system maintains a website called
“Domain Web” where information about General Civil, Probate
and Family Law cases can be accessed. Images of documents
for General Civil cases can be viewed and printed in PDF
format.
The court system also makes judicial appointments, fees, links
to alternative dispute resolution services and a self help
service which offers low cost legal services and links to further
courts and Spanish language sites.
