Type Test Approval
The basics


The process that ensures that vehicles meet relevant environmental and
safety standards.
Three routes to approval:
1.
European Community Whole Vehicle Type Approval (ECWVTA)
2. National Small Series Type Approval (NSSTA)
3. Individual Vehicle Approval (IVA)

Type Test Approval
1. European Community Whole Vehicle Type Approval (ECWVTA)
 For companies that convert various vehicles of same types per year and/or
plan to sell them across Europe.
– One vehicle per type must be tested
– Once approved, unlimited number of vehicle of same type can be built
and sold in both UK and Europe
– On-going Conformity of Production required
– Full test requirement must be met.

2. National Small Series Type Approval (NSSTA)
 For companies that manufacture modest number of vehicle and mainly sell
them in UK.
 Limited number of vehicle to be converted per year:
<75 M1 vehicles
< 250 M2/M3 vehicles
 Once approved, more vehicle of same types can be built across the UK
 Ongoing Conformity of Production required.

3. Individual Vehicle Approval (IVA)
 For companies that convert a very small number of a vehicle type
 Every vehicle has to be inspected by VOSA (UK) or DVA (Northern Ireland)
 A certificate has to be issued for every approved vehicle
 Suits one off or bespoke vehicle
 No Conformity of Production required
 Vehicles can only be sold in UK
 Cost: £250 to £550 per type of vehicle
Type Test Approval
Multi Stage Build (MSB)
 Concept of multi-stage built applies across the approval route.
 Converters will require access to the base vehicle manufacturer’s approval
information.
 Converters can approve vehicles to equal or lower vehicle type specification
at different stage of the approval process.

 M2, M3 Completed vehicle, new types: 29th April 2011
 M2, M3 Completed vehicle, existing types: 29th October 2011
