RHS Learning Management
System
Microsoft’s SharePoint 2003 &
2010 Enterprise version
What is Ms. Kray talking about?
• I am talking about the Randolph district,
high school, teacher, and student
websites. (Yes, soon you will have your own
website!)
• In this presentation I will show you some
of the ways that Ms. Kray’s website will
make our lives so much easier!
What is SharePoint and what does
it have to do with me, the student?
• “MS SharePoint makes it easier for people
to work together… [We] can set up Web
sites to share information with others,
manage documents [and projects] from
start to finish, and publish information.”
• (From http://sharepoint.microsoft.com/en-
us/product/capabilities/Pages/default.aspx)
What information do students need
to know about and use in Ms.
Kray’s website?
• Let’s take a look…
http://teachers.randolph.k12.ma.us/rhs/krayf/default.aspx
At the very least students will need to know about:
Classwork
Documents
The Calendar (very important!)
Class Discussion
Wiki
Links
The Classwork Documents Link
• The Classwork documents link will have subfolders per class and
•
•
•
•
•
•
then per unit of study.
Let’s say you are taking Junior English (American Literature) and we
are reading, for example, The Catcher in the Rye. That folder will
contain all of your handouts, projects, and rubrics for that unit.
If you lose any handouts, you can easily get another copy online.
The documents posted online will also help you with organization, as
you can see much of what you need to keep in your binders and
notebooks.
If you want to know what is next, you can look at the next handout
and due date. By looking ahead, you can better prepare yourself for
your next task.
If you are having trouble with the lesson, I can post support
materials such as graphic organizers and other necessary
modifications.
For those of you who want to challenge yourselves, in addition to
the basic handouts and information, there are also enrichment
handouts and links.
General Links
• Let’s continue with CITR example. Under “General
•
Links,” you would click on your class, American
Literature, and then CITR.
Now you can see links related to our class discussions
and the novel, such as videos giving a cultural context
for the 1950’s, the Vlog Brother’s entertaining critical
analysis of the novel, an interactive map of Holden’s
perambulations in NYC, a slideshow showing places
Holden visited, and links to movies that can be related to
the novel.
(Please note that I am always updating and adding links.)
General Links for All Classes:
• Vocabulary: links to your vocabulary lists, games to
•
•
•
•
practice your vocabulary of the week, and other
vocabulary games (roots, synonyms, videos, flashcards,
etc.)
Magazine and newspaper links to complete your weekly
current events journal (CEJ) assignment
Research support
SAT and MCAS preparation
Language Games and Other Interesting Stuff (learningstyle self-test, link to College Board, comic strip maker,
wordplay, Scrabble, book recommendations etc.)
*Calendar*
• A summary of the day’s lesson and your homework for
•
•
•
the day will be posted daily.
If you are absent or if you “forget” what the HW
assignment was, you should go to the calendar and
locate the necessary information.
Parents and guardians can also check to see the
day’s lesson and your daily HW assignments.
If you are absent, unless you have a documented
excused absence (in case of emergency)…
• YOU ARE STILL RESPONSIBLE FOR
COMPLETING THE HW AND CLASSWORK.
Class Discussion
• You will receive your own username and
•
•
•
password.
At times I will assign an online class discussion.
If you do not have access to a computer at
home, it is your responsibility to go to the school
or public library to complete the assignments.
Computers are a part and necessity of modern
life!
WIKI: student-created mini-encyclopedias on a
given topic. I will explain more when the time
for the assignment comes.
Closure
• Task Definition – What is SharePoint?
• Information Seeking Strategies and – Where can you find the
•
•
•
•
information related to this classroom that you need?
Location & Access – What kind of information will you find in Ms. Kray’s
website?
Use of Information – When using the website , what kinds of activities
will you complete, at home or in class, self-motivated or assigned?
Synthesis – In what ways will this help you as a student?
Evaluation – Predict the outcome of this work. Do you think this will be
effective? Efficient? Do you think this is something all classes should have
access to?
– Do you have any other ideas about how you’d like to use technology in the
classroom? Extra credit will be given to ideas that are adopted!
– More to come as functionality increases!
