SME initiative
Upward Flame Propagation
Test 1 from NASA-STD-6001
• Purpose: To determine if a
material, when exposed to a
standard ignition source, will
self-extinguish and not transfer
burning debris
• These tests are used to determine
the flammability characteristics
of materials in their proposed use
environments, to ensure that the
materials used in space are safe

Upward Flame Propagation
Test 1 from NASA-STD-6001
• Typical Specimen
– 33 X 5 cm.
– Worst-case thickness
• Ignition Source
– Chemical Igniter
• Test Conditions
– Worst-case pressure, temp, and
oxygen concentration
• Acceptance Criteria
– Material is self-extinguishing if
burn length is < 15 cm and does
not propagate by burning debris
