Using other Libraries
• Inter Library Loans (see Library webpage)
• SCONUL Access - a co-operative scheme that enables
researchers to visit and borrow materials from more
than 125 libraries in Ireland and the UK – get a SCONUL
Access card from the Library Information Desk.
• Letter of Introduction (Faculty Librarian)
Recommend/purchase resources for the library - Books
Books and multimedia
• Faculty and staff can order books and non-book material (e.g. multimedia),
which will then be added to the library collections - Contact your Faculty
Librarian for information on procedures, including advice on whether your
Head of Dept needs to sign off on orders.
• Books can be recommended at any time of year but get orders in 8-10 weeks
before the semester start date if you want to be sure …
• Send a copy of recommended reading lists to your Faculty Librarian to
ensure that recommended materials are available for your students in good
time.
• Collection development policies have recently been approved for each
academic department.
• The bookfund is allocated by the Library & Information Resources
Development Committee. Allocations are based on FTEs. Each faculty has a
representative on the committee.
Recommend/purchase resources for the library - Journals
Journals and databases
• Local subscriptions are paid for through the library budget or through
departmental budgets. All local subscriptions are currently being reviewed.
• Many of our journals and databases are paid for through the IReL (Irish
Research eLibrary) consortium of the 7 Irish universities + RCSI.
• Where a new course is planned, it is essential that funding for resources is
included in the planning – faculty librarians are members of faculty boards
and should be involved in new course planning.
• Subscriptions are ongoing commitments, so requests take more time to
process and decisions must be based on future budget planning.

Librarian, Student Engagement
& Success
• Develop and implement programmes and
initiatives aimed at improving undergraduate
student transition, retention and success.
• Focus on early-stage undergraduates, on
undergraduate student groups new to the
university, and on modules with high attrition
rates.
