The Importance of
Soil Stabilization Technology
Utilize Funding to Build
Superior Roads

Economic impact
–

Build cost-effective roads
Road quality impact
–
Protect investment by building better roads
that have longer useful lives
The Economist, Dec. 21, 2002 –
“The Road to Hell is Unpaved”

Bad roads:
–
–
–
add about 15% to manufacturing costs
result in rural people paying higher costs for goods
result in rural people receiving less for goods sold

The AfDB concludes there is a link between
remoteness and poverty

Countries with better roads produce and sell 1/3
more per hectare and enjoy wages 12% higher

Each $1 into road maintenance lowers vehicle
maintenance $2 to $3
Soil Stabilizers –
An Essential Component in Successful
Road Rehabilitation Projects
The USA Trade and Development Agency (TDA)
completed a recent study of road budgets in seven
(7) South East Europe countries:
“While an average of 4% of the existing
government budgets would be required to
maintain primary and secondary road
networks in an adequate state, in fact less
than 1% is spent. In most countries in the
region wholly inadequate amounts are
spent on basic road maintenance.”
Soil Stabilizers –
An Essential Component in Successful
Road Rehabilitation Projects
“Lack of maintenance leads to the
requirement of complete replacement,
resulting in a more costly lifetime
expenditure cycle”.
SE Europe Transport and Energy Projects
– Conference Briefing Book, Sept. 1, 2000
Soil Stabilizers –
An Essential Component in Successful
Road Rehabilitation Projects
USAID/Honduras Hurricane Mitch Special
Objective states pg. 5:
“Rebuilding Better – The USAID/Honduras
reconstruction program should do more
than just replace what was lost; it should be
an opportunity to transform the country
into something better - the development of
improved design specifications and use of
new technologies in road rehabilitation”.
Soil Stabilizers –
An Essential Component in Successful
Road Rehabilitation Projects
Inter American Development Bank –
The Office of the President of IADB sent a letter stating:
“…the IADB would support this MOP (Ministerio de
Obras Publicas) initiative to incorporate the use of
soil stabilizers in the specifications of future bids by
the Direccion Nacional de Caminos of El Salvador”
- Jorge Claro de la Maza on behalf of Mr, Enrique
Iglesias, President of IADB, August-1999
Characteristics of Superior Roads:








Reduced construction costs
Minimal maintenance costs
Longer useful lives
Better wear qualities
Increased transport capacity
Greater safety and comfort
Lower vehicle operating costs
Constructed with low environmental effect
- Soil Stabilization Guarantees Superior Roads
Areas of Application




Stabilize “soil only” roads during construction
or rehabilitation
Stabilize and upgrade existing, deteriorated
gravel roads
Stabilize and upgrade existing, soil roads or
deteriorated gravel roads, then apply double
“chip and seal” wear surface
Recondition existing deteriorated pavement,
stabilize then pave
