Goals

Student Placement
 Middle School teachers will use a standards based
rubric to identify honors placement for student in:




English
Math/Science
Social Studies
Foreign Language
Case managers will use an Individualized Education Program (IEP) to
identify which class students will be placed in for Special
Education. If the second number if a 9 on the pink course
selection, it is a class that is offered in the special education
department.
Rubric for Literature I Enriched
 Students recommended for Literature I
Enriched must:
 Be active, critical readers and be able to clearly
articulate their ideas in speaking and writing.
 Be able to type with accuracy and speed.
 Be able to write an entrance essay to be scored
by GHS English teachers.
The Literature I Enriched course is designed to
prepare students for the following track:
Literature II Enriched, AP Language & AP
Literature
Rubric for Geometry
 Students recommended for Geometry must:
 Have the knowledge of linear, exponential, and
quadratic functions.
 Be able to think deeply, communicate well, and
solve challenging problems that require some
extended chain of reasoning.
 Take responsibility for their learning.
 Geometry emphasizes an abstract, formal
approach to the study of Geometry
Rubric for Biology Advanced Studies
 Students recommended for Biology Advanced Studies
must:
 Be able to take accurate, consistent, reliable
measurements.
 Be able to develop a conclusion based on data
referencing the data to support their idea.
 Be able to develop a hypothesis including the
independent and dependent variable with a clear result
predicted.
Advanced Studies Biology is a comprehensive study of Biology. Biology
is designed to provide information about fundamental concepts of life
and life processes. The ideal math pairing would be Geometry.
Contact your high school counselor if you prefer your son/daughter is
placed in Biology.

Biology (sophomore year Algebra II is paired with Chemistry)

Rubric for World History Enriched
 Students recommended for World History Enriched must demonstrate
be able to read, discuss and write critically.
 Honors World History: preparatory course for AP US History, which
students can take sophomore year. The focus of course is on reading
(textbook, historical documents, primary/secondary sources),
analysis/annotation skills, and writing skills in which students develop
a thesis using historical information to support the argument

Rubric for Spanish I
 Vocabulary study skills and a strong
command of English grammar are necessary
 The student needs to be able to
grasp/understand vocabulary, spelling, and
sentence structure in English
 If the student cannot grasp English
concepts, it is difficult to understand
Spanish concepts (the class will require a
connection to be made between English and
Spanish)
Recommendation Letters
 Middle School teachers will contact each parent
via email with a recommendation for Math,
English, Science and Social Studies.
 Geneseo High School will mail a letter indicating
all selected classes in early March.
 If a parent has concerns about the course
recommendation(s), please contact Mr. Utsinger
or your child’s high school counselor before
March 19.
Selecting Electives
 Course terms which are “S12” meet either
semester
 Course terms which are “S1” meet first
semester
 Course terms which are “S2” meet second
semester
 Make sure you select both semesters of a year long course. Year long
courses are indicated in bold on page 2 of the Course Planning Guide.
(i.e. foreign language, band, choir, Family and Consumer Science,
Intro to Ag). Do not select a course with 9 as the second number
without teacher permission.

 You may take one or two semesters of study
hall.
 First semester study hall (90121).
 Second semester study hall (90122).
Students may seek additional academic assistance
from teachers during study hall. There is no
guarantee your study hall will be scheduled
during 7th period.
Meetings at the
Middle School
 Counselors met with the entire 8th grade class today to
distribute a course planning guide and list of course
offerings.
 Students and parents can begin to enter course requests in
their Skyward Account today.
 Students will need to bring their printout of course requests
with them to school on February 10th. Students who fail
to return their requests on February 10th, will not be able
to attend the spring dance at the MS.
Directions for requesting
elective courses in Skyward
(electives only)
 Select at least 8 numbers entered under “courses
requested”. If you have only 6 credits, you must
select a first and a second semester study hall. If
you have 7 credits, you need only select a first OR
a second semester of study hall. If you have
requested 8 credits, you cannot request a study
hall.
 To begin the process, you will log on to the Family
Access page using either the parent or student
access. Follow the steps on the next frame.

To begin the process, you will log onto the Family Access page today using
either the parent or student access (found on high school tab).
 1. Choose “Schedule” (left side tool bar)
 2. Click “Courses for 2015-16 high school” (upper right)
 3. Find the classes you want to pick
 4. Highlight each request (follow pink worksheet course selection list)
 5. Click “add course”
 6. After 8 #’s have been added, choose the print icon in upper right corner
 7. Check list of choices you have made.
 8. If correct, select the print icon on the top right side of the page and print. This
page must be signed by a parent and student.
 9. Logout
 10. Please write down 2 (two) alternatives

Return the course request page to the HS Guidance office by February 10th. Do not
select a course with 9 as the second number without teacher permission.
Signature Page
Your skyward printout must have parent and student
signatures.
The print out of your requests must be turned in to
the middle school counselors by February 10th .
Please do not request “alternates” in online scheduling.
Write at least 1 full year class and 1 semester class
as “alternates” on the skyward printout page. Do
not write down a class you are not prepared to
enroll in.
