What is a Hines Break?
The Hines Break is an O&M technique
which is a systematic method of
disengaging unwanted or incorrect sighted
guide assistance.
How to do the Hines Break
• The students responds to the guide’s pressure
by relaxing the grasped arm and raising it to his
opposite shoulder, keeping feet stationary
• With his free hand, the student grasp the guide’s
wrist while verbalizing his intentions.
• To decline aid- the student pulls guides wrist
forward until the guide loses contact. The
student doesn’t assume the proper grip for
sighted guide technique. The guide’s wrist is
released
• To accept aid- the student will assume the
proper grip for sighted guide.
