How can I help my child at home?
There are many ways to help your
child.
 As with reading, try to make maths as much fun as
possible - games, puzzles and jigsaws are a great way
to start. It's also important to show how we use
maths skills in our everyday lives and to involve your
child in this.
 Identifying problems and solving them can also help your
child develop maths skills. If you see him or her puzzling
over something, talk about the problem and try to work
out the solution together.
Tips for helping your child to enjoy
maths:
 Point out the different shapes to be found around your
home.
 Take your child shopping and talk about the quantities of
anything you buy.
 Let your child handle money and work out how much things
cost.
 Look together for numbers on street signs and car
registration plates.
 Look at the time and ask questions about how long is until?
Etc.

Time – Level 4
I can solve
problems that
involve time,
recording my
calculation
methods clearly
I can read a
timetable/calendar
in order to solve a
problem
These are the start and finish times
on a
video recorder.
START 14:45 FINISH 17:25
For how long was the video
recording?
Simon's birthday is on 26 August. He
always has a party on the last

Mental Maths – Level 5
I can multiply and divide
whole numbers and
decimals by 10, 100 or
1000
I divided a number by 100. The
answer was 24.8. What was my
number?
A pack containing 1000 sheets
of paper is 9.8 cm thick. What is
the approximate thickness of
one sheet?
Explain how you can use the
fact 7 × 8 = 56 to find the
answer to 5.6 ÷ 0.8.
Written Calculations - Level 5
I can calculate with whole
numbers and decimals,
using mental and written
methods as appropriate
Make up an example of an
addition or subtraction,
involving decimals, that
you would do in your
head. Now make up an
example you would do on
paper. Explain the reasons
for using these two
methods.
Kim knows that 137 × 28
= 3836. Explain how
she can use this
information to work out
the multiplications:
138 × 28
137 × 27
Methods for the four calculations
Please see the handout, which give examples of the
way the calculations are taught.
