Assignment 1 Scenario Given
You have been asked to produce a leaflet that explains to potential employees how the structure
of a business affects the job roles and functional areas within the business.
To do this you will need to identify two contrasting businesses. To be a suitable contrast the
businesses should have different organisational structures, such as one small and one large
business.
For each business you have selected, identify the different functional areas within the business
and explain the purpose of each functional area.
Then for each business identify and describe two job roles from different functional areas.
Compare the four job roles and their responsibilities (i.e. two from each business), identifying
similarities and differences.
Finally, for one business, analyse how the organisational structure affects the job roles and
functional areas within the business. To do this you should:
•analyse how the structure contributes to achieving the aims and objectives, showing the
importance of the relationships and interactions between the functional areas
•analyse how the organisational structure impacts on job roles
•analyse how the organisational structure impacts on the functional areas.
Include relevant examples to support your statements.
Say whaaaaaat?
Lets start by looking at what a
functional area is?
Most businesses have a number of different
departments, each has a specific job or task to do - these
are called 'functions'.
You’ve heard the names used for these functional areas
before......
......Here are the functional areas
A closer look
Some of the things the different
functional areas do.....

Caution!
All businesses will carry out each function, but...
•Not every business will have a separate department that is responsible for each
function
•Very large businesses will have specialist staff in each department and these
departments could be spread across the globe!
•Small businesses may have one or two people who try and do everything!
Different businesses, therefore, will manage their functions in different ways so do
not expect every business to do exactly the same thing.
