Character
• Main – the central character that
the story focuses on and revolves
around
• Minor – supporting characters
that help keep the story moving
along
• Round – a character we know a
lot of details about - multifaceted
- personality
• Flat – a character we only know a
little about
• Stock – a stereotype – one or two
qualities define the character
completely
• Static – a character who stays
the same throughout the story
• Dynamic – a character who
changes or grows as a direct
result of the events in the
story. The change is
emotional or mental, NOT
physical
• Protagonist – the good guy?
• Antagonist – the villian?
NO!
• Protagonist – the main character
in a story
• Antagonist – the character or
force in conflict with the
protagonist
Characterization
• Characterization – the act of
creating or developing a character
• Direct characterization – the
author directly states a characters
traits
(Ex: Mme. Loisel was charming.)
• Indirect characterization – the author
provides clues about a character by
describing:
–What the character looks like
–What the character says or does
–How other characters react to the
character
(Ex: “What do you expect me to do
with that?”)
