Palliative Medicine.
An approach which improves QUALITY OF LIFE of
PATIENTS and their FAMILIES facing LIFETHREATENING ILLNESS through prevention and
RELIEF OF SUFFERING by means of early
identification and impeccable assessment and
treatment of pain and other problems, physical,
psychosocial and spiritual.
Cancer pain relief and palliative care. Geneva; World Health Organization: 2002
From April until March of last year, we admitted 295
patients, to the in-patient unit.
177 of those were new to the service.
163 patients had primary diagnosis of cancer.
Of the 14 others, they had conditions such as,
MND, MS , CCF and COPD.
We consider admissions for symptom management or
end of life care.
All referrals are discussed at the multi-disciplinary
team meeting at 08:45 each morning. Monday-Friday.
Why would you refer a
patient for specialist
palliative care?
For complex symptom
management, such as:
Pain Management.
Nausea and vomiting.
Psychological support.
Intermittent Intestinal
Obstruction.
Breathlessness.
For end of life care, usually in the last
days/week of life.
This may be because the patient has
expressed a wish to die at the hospice.
(Completed a PPC)
Or there are other complex issues.
