Phase II
Direct Care Basics
Overview of industry
Resources for support/success and
remediation if needed
Personal care skills which can be applied in
numerous jobs and in personal life
If DCW is not a “fit”, may find
other work in the industry
Solid foundation to assist students’ success
in future courses
Important to recognize this may be where
the student needs to be instead of pursuing
NAI
If used as prerequisite (optional or not)
may provide a more focused and prepared
student when compared to one who enters
otherwise
What activities would you suggest to community colleges
regarding offering courses to home care agencies?
• Offer open house/informational sessions to local
home care agencies in the community to learn
about PHCAST courses.
• These may need to be offered biannually to keep the
course in the forefront
• Access a list of all licensed home care agencies by
county on the DHSR website
(http://www.ncdhhs.gov/dhsr/reports.htm)
• Consider offering the training onsite and notify
agencies of that option well in advance.
What are the talking points for colleges when they meet
and/or network with their community employers (of DCWs)?
• Communicate to the agencies that the DHSR licensure rules require
competency training of aides that are not listed on the NAI registry and that
these courses are for these aides who can provide the limited assistance
•

(2)
Assisting with Bath/Shower;
(3)
Assisting with Toileting;
(4)

• Remind the agencies that they can use the training certificates when they are
marketing their agencies to clients.
