Situation*
Recently, a media magazine published a review of a popular
drama screened on national television about a family
reunion. In the review it stated:
“Reunions of all kinds force people to confront who
they are, what they were, what they hope to
become and how they relate to each other.”
As a follow-up, the magazine plans to publish a series of
articles on the topic of reunions and has asked readers to
submit an article for possible inclusion. You decide to write
an article.

Assignment: write an article on ‘Reunions’.
The following may be of help:
-think of the consequences of reunions:
-how people may have changed as individuals
-what their aspirations once must have been and
what they have realized of those aspirations
-how people get on after a long period of
separation
-how do you assess the value of reunions? Do they
serve a purpose?
Ask another student to read your article when you
have finished. Revise, if necessary.
Finally, hand in your article to your teacher for a
final evaluation.

Tip: read the hints about
how to get started on the
following pages
• When you set out to write the introductory
paragraph of an article, there are a few factors to
keep in mind. The more organized you can be ahead
of time, the easier your article will flow in the
direction you want it to.
• First of all, think of the entire article you are
planning to write. Ask yourself what the goal is of
your writing. Do you seek to strictly inform or is
your approach going to be more complex? If you
think that the reader may have a difficult time
understanding what point you are trying to make,
the introductory paragraph can give some guidance
to anyone who may struggle with your writing.
• Quotations can be a fine way to start out an
article. Either one from a philosopher or famous
person or a quotation gained from a person
interviewed for the article. No matter which you
choose, it can be a powerful way to approach your
writing.
• A dictionary definition may also do the trick –
what exactly is meant by ‘reunion’?
• Rhetorical questions sometimes work as a
philosophical starter to lead the reader gently into
your topic.
• Most important of all: before you start writing,
make sure you know what your conclusion is
going to be – there is no worse essay than the one
that changes course midway …
