Text A: Cartoon

Modelled Response

When an individual embarks on a journey in search for renewal and enlightenment, inner struggles can creates physical and intellectual limitations that lead to a sense of detachment and helplessness. travelling upon. journey. For example, in ‘Text A’, it depicts a man walking from right to light with his thoughts pouring out of his head and paving a path that he is Here, the cartoonist has utilised both salience and vectors to highlight how an individual’s inability to move away from the past creates barriers on their Moreover, through the use of salience, the viewer immediately notices the curved posture of the man with his arms hanging helplessly by his side. This indicates that this individual feels a sense of lose and detachment because of the subdued and inactive posture. This is reinforced by the use of vectors, which guide the viewer’s gaze from the individual to his thoughts, which are flowing out of his head like a spring of water, but rather than paving a path in front of the individual, the path is being paved behind the individual. This indicates a sense stagnation because of his inability to look forward and move away from his past and hence, his journey to renewal and enlightenment with be replaced with detachment and helplessness as he becomes engulfed within his internal sphere with thoughts that limit his progress and thus his journey will become fruitless and meaningless.

Focus Poem: Weapon’s Training by Bruce Dawe

And when I say eyes right I want to hear those eyeballs click and the gentle pitter-patter of falling dandruff you there what's the matter why are you looking at me are you a queer?

look to your front if you had one more brain it'd be lonely what are you laughing at you in the back row with the unsightly fat between your elephant ears open that drain you call a mind and listen remember first the cockpit drill when you go down be sure the old crown-jewels are safely tucked away what could be more distressing than to hold off with a burst from your trusty weapon a mob of the little yellows only to find back home because of your position your chances of turning the key in the ignition considerably reduced? allright now suppose for the sake of argument you've got a number-one blockage and a brand-new pack of Charlies are coming at you you can smell their rotten fish-sauce breath hot on the back of your stupid neck allright now what are you going to do about it? that's right grab and check the magazine man it's not a woman's tit worse luck or you'd be set too late you nit they're on you and your tripes are round your neck you've copped the bloody lot just like I said and you know what you are? You're dead, dead, dead

Modelled Response

When an individual embarks on a forced journey, the attitudes of others creates a sense of animosity that creates a sense of dehumanisation and hate. Within this context, in the poem, ‘Weapon’s Training’ the persona states, ‘you've got a number-one blockage and a brand-new pack of Charlies are coming at you you can smell their rotten fish-sauce breath hot on the back of your stupid neck allright now what are you going to do about it?’ Here, Dawe has utilised derogatory language to highlight how before the soldiers enter battle they go through a process of dehumanisation in which hate is instilled in their hearts. Moreover, the use of derogatory language, such as, ‘number-one blockage’, correlates killing in war to a man’s sense of masculinity and hence, it implies that a man who is scared is no longer a man. The drill sergeant is attempting to transform the soldiers into killing machines by challenging and questioning their manhood and thus the soldiers a placed in a position where they need to prove their masculinity. This is reinforced by the further use of derogatory language, such as, ‘Charlies’ and ‘smell their rotten fish-sauce breath’, which seeks to demonise the Vietnamese during the Vietnam War. Through this process of demonisation, the drill sergeant was attempting to convey an image of the Vietnamese as less than human. The aim here is the remove all emotions attached the human life so that the soldiers will be able to kill without remorse and hence, the attitude of the drill sergeant is attempting to create a sense of animosity towards the Vietnamese. Finally, these individual soldiers, who have overtaken a during not by their choosing, as many were conscripted, have been hypnotised by a drill sergeant who wants them to become killing machines, which forced them to adopt both an internal and external journey of killing and atrocities.
