Aim: How is a food chain different
than a food web?
Food Web
Objectives
1. Learn how a food chain is different from a food web.
2. Learn how to create a food chain and food web.
3. Learn how to analyze the interdependence of one organism to another.
Life in an ecosystem requires a source of
energy.
Food Chains and Food Webs are similar
because they both
• model the flow
of energy in an
ecosystem.
However, food chains are simple!!
• A food chain is a
simplified way to
look at the energy
that passes from
producers to
consumers.
• Because we know
each predator does
not eat only 1 type
of prey.
What is a Food Web?
• A more realistic way of
looking at the relationship
of plants and animals in
an environment
• Several food chains linked
together
• A predator from one food
chain may be linked to the
prey of another food
chain
Food Webs are more realistic and more complicated.

Regents Based Questions
3. A food web is more stable than a food chain
because a food web
A. transfers all of the producer energy to
herbivores
B. reduces the number of niches in the ecosystem
C. includes alternative pathways for energy flow
D. includes more consumers than producers

Analyzing Changes to the Food Chain
• Each situation describes a change in a food chain environment. In
complete sentences describe how the changes will affect the organisms
in each food chain.
