The more UMDs in use, the greater the demand for portable power UMDs include UMPCs (Ultra-Mobile PCs), netbooks, media tablets, MIDs and mobile CE (Consumer Electronics) devices. Demand is growing in every part of the globe, but is particularly strongly in developing regions.

Lithium-ion batteries last for 300-500 charge-discharge cycles. The use of power-hungry smartphones, such as BlackBerrys and iPhones, is depleting battery power faster, requiring a daily charge for many users. This puts the life of a smartphone battery at less than 2 years, with charging capacity beginning to deplete to 80% after 1 year of average use.
