MY
PHILOSOPHY
I BELIEVE:
..kids learn most effectively when they feel safe, valued,
challenged and learn to be resilient and take risks.
..I am a ‘facilitator’ of education rather than someone who
solely imparts information on students. We all learn best by
discovering information for ourselves.
..kids have a range of learning styles, interests, gifts and needs
and it is my responsibility to cater for all of these to the best of
my ability.
..kids need to be active in order to concentrate well.
..it is vital that as an educator, I continually ask ‘WHY’ and that I
challenge my students to do the same.
MIDDLE SCHOOL UNIT
The ‘Bubble Class’
MIDDLE SCHOOLING
...angsty pre-teens?
...confused?
...raging hormones?
...huge physical changes?
...discovering identity?
...discovering the opposite sex?
...consolidating learning style?
...vast array of personalities,
learning needs/ abilities, social
issues?
…really ‘pushing’ things at home?
...ALL OF THE ABOVE??

HOME READING
Actively listening to your child read is one of the most
effective ways to enhance literary awareness and skills.
I encourage you to set aside at least one 15 minute period a
week to listen to your child read.
Active Listening involves:
PAUSE (3 second pause allows for self correction)
PROMPT (sounds like, re-read sentence)
PRAISE (when a tricky word is sounded out correctly, at the
end of a page)
HOME READING
Share the reading.
Set an end point (particularly for
boys!
Discussing the events &
characters, making predictions,
questioning the author’s intent are
immensely beneficial for student’s
inferential understanding. Non
fiction texts are great!
HOMEWORK
45 Minutes (Max) + Reading
Mathletics/Edmodo
Maths Assignments
Homework is not intended for
‘New Learning’ - Consolidation
or Completion
HOMEWORK CLUB
I won’t be setting homework
for the sake of setting
homework!

FOCUS ON MANAGING
OWN BEHAVIOUR
BULLYING & HARASSMENT
1. Tell perpetrator to ‘Stop’
2. Tell them to stop again in presence of a staff
member or trustworthy person
3. Incident is reported to Leadership team who
mediate between two people/ groups involved
4. Appropriate action is taken
Developing Teacher/Student Relationship is vital – I
aim to be viewed as someone they can all trust to
confide in if they are being targeted.
If you feel your child is being bullied, please contact
me. It is a complex issue in the Middle Years, but one
that needs to be dealt with.
INQUIRY BASED LEARNING
I HEAR AND I FORGET,
I SEE AND I REMEMBER,
I DO AND I UNDERSTAND
INQUIRY BASED LEARNING
‘Involvement that leads to Understanding’
Student Engagement & Empowerment
Development of skills to seek, filter and
use relevant information
Encourages and necessitates asking
questions (WHY & HOW not just WHO,
WHERE & WHEN)
MARK TREADWELL
A challenging, thought provoking Professional Development,
discussing a ‘Paradigm Shift’ in education.
3 year commitment for 7 schools in the Western Region
Based on new research on how the brain actually learns
I took heart & direction in his emphasis on prioritising and
developing SKILLS/KEY COMPETENCIES in learners.
NUMERACY – ADRIAN
DILGER
An exciting project based on constructing Numeracy units
based on investigations, with the aim of helping students
develop a more genuine and holistic sense of numerical
concepts.
Already seeing greater engagement/enjoyment &
(hopefully) understanding of measurement concepts.
Assessment will not rely solely on ‘end of unit tests’ but will
be ongoing through a range of carefully constructed
questioning of student understanding.
Investigations/effective questioning allow for greater
‘differentiation’ so that students individual learning needs
are catered for.
INTEGRATED
CURRICULUM
The amount of ‘content’ Year 7
teachers are asked to deliver
across all learning areas is huge.
We integrate our curriculum as
much as possible to:
Assist students to make
connections across all learning
areas, rather than view ‘subjects’ in
isolation
Fit everything in!
