Why America got Involved
•To stop communism from spreading in
Southeast Asia
•We feared that if communism gained
control in Vietnam other countries
would fall into the hands of
communism
•To keep south Vietnam from being
overthrown by north Vietnam (south

the War
•Vietnam was getting money, and
support from Russia, and China
•America first was paying France
$10,000,000 a year to fight Vietnam
when Harry Truman was president
•By the time Eisenhower was president
we were giving France $400,000,000 a
year to fight Vietnam

Vietnam
•The americans failed to win the hearts
and minds of the Vietnamese people
•We couldn’t help the republic of
Vietnam make a better government
•The Americans also could not solve
the political problems in Vietnam

•This was the first high-tech war
•After bombing Vietnam we had
bombed them more than Japan and
Germany in WW11
•58,148 Americans were killed in
Vietnam
•304,000 were injured
•2/3 of the American men fighting in
Vietnam weren’t drafted into the war
