Globalization and the World Today
Interdependence
• Interdependence is a
relationship between
countries in which they
rely on one another for
resources, goods, or
services.
• Automakers purchase
parts from around the
world and the USA.
• People purchase food and
clothing from around the
world and the USA.
Multinational Corporation
• Companies that operate in a
number of different countries are
called multinational. Exxon, Ford,
BP, Toyota, Samsung are all
multinational giants.
• For manufacturing they select
spots where the raw materials or
labor are the cheapest. This
enables them to produce
components of their products on
different continents. They ship
the various components to
another location to be assembled.
• This allows them the view of the
whole world as a market for their
goods.
Great Recession
• The textbook definition of a recession
is a downturn in economic activity,
characterized by at least two
consecutive quarters of decline in a
country's gross domestic product
(GDP).
• The 2007-2009 recession (The Great
Recession) was mostly blamed on a
housing bubble. After a run-up in
housing prices in the early part of the
decade, home prices plummeted, then
thousands of borrowers couldn't afford
to pay their loans. Meanwhile, Wall
Street sold financial instruments tied to
the loans that were eventually
discovered to be of little value.

G8
• The largest and wealthiest
nations in the world began
meeting in the 1970’s to
promote economic
development.
• Canada
• France
• Germany
• Italy
• Japan
• Russia* (not participating
post invasion of Crimea)
• United Kingdom
• United States
G20
• The twenty largest
economies of the world
representing over 80% of
the worlds GDP.
• Argentina, Australia, Brazil,
Canada, China, France,
Germany, India, Indonesia,
Italy, Japan, Republic of
Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi
Arabia, South Africa, Turkey,
United Kingdom, United
States—and the European
Union
NAFTA
• The North American Free
Trade Agreement
(NAFTA) which took
effect in 1994, has made
trade among Mexico, the
USA, and Canada easier.
European Union
• The European Union
(EU) is an organization
that promotes
political, and
economic
cooperation in
Europe.
• The EU introduced a
common currency, the
euro making trade
easier.
World Trade Organization
• Since 1995 the World
Trade Organization (WTO)
has overseen the
lowering of protective
tariffs (taxes on imports)
to ensure that trade
among nations flows as
smoothly and freely as
possible.
OPEC
• The Organization of
Petroleum Exporting
Countries. Member
nations agree on how
much oil to pump and at
what price to sell their oil.
• 1973 OPEC declared an oil
embargo against any
nation that supported
Israel. Americans were
faced with a fuel shortage
and prices increased.
Internet
• Greatest invention ever? The web has
transformed at least a dozen fields:
education, news, book publishing, music,
finance, networking, dating, charity
donations, shopping, language-learning,
cartography, medicine, hypochondria and
the way we talk to friends.
• But above all it has fanned the movement
for democratic change in countries whose
inhabitants used to be hobbled by the fear
that they were alone. The web enabled them
to reach out, find support at home and
abroad, and muster the courage to
overthrow their tyrants. It helped them bring
in the promise, at least, of a brighter dawn.
Ask a young Egyptian, Tunisian or Libyan to
name the greatest invention, and they might
well choose the world wide web.

Popular Culture
• Popular culture refers to
culture traits that are well
known and widely
accepted. Food, sports,
music, and movies are
examples.
Population Density
• A measure of the
number of people
living in an area.
Deforestation
Although forests are
renewable we can
cut down trees faster
than they can grow.
The result is the
clearing of trees or
deforestation.
Drought
• Droughts are periods when
little rain falls, and crops
are damaged. During a
drought crops and the
grasses for cattle die and
people begin to starve.
• Drought can cause famine.
Famine is an extreme
shortage of food.
Overpopulation
• A situation in which an
area contains more
people than available
resources can support.
World Health Organization
• Agency of the United
Nations to promote
international public heath.
Humanitarian Aid
• Humanitarian aid, or
assistance to people in
distress. It can be in the
form of aid from one
nation to another, or
from international
organizations like UNICEF
or the International Red
Cross.

Terrorism
• Today some groups, frustrated
by what they feel to be
oppression by their own
government or the policies of
other governments, often turn
to terrorism.
• They use violence or the
threat of it to publicize their
grievances or to press their
demands. Terrorism involves
the use of violence against
innocent civilians.
