WHAT DOES A GOOD READER DO?






Good readers:
Know it is their responsibility to monitor
comprehension
Only hears the voice that reads the words when their
brains stop imagining the action occurring
Know when the voice inside their head starts
distracting them away from the text
Can remember what they just read
Know when they are not getting clarifying questions
answered
WHAT DOES A GOOD READER DO?
Good readers:
 Know how to identify their own confusion
with a text
 Know how to get themselves unstuck
while reading a text
 LISTEN TO THE VOICES IN THEIR
HEADS!

THE RECITING VOICE


The voice that
repeats the words the
reader physically
sees on the page
Does not draw
meaning from the text
THE CONVERSATION VOICE



The voice that talks
back and forth with
the text
Represents the
reader’s own
thoughts about the
text
Interacts with the text
THE INTERACTING VOICE
 Deepens
the reader’s understanding
of the text
 This voice:
 Makes connections
 Asks questions
 Identifies confusion
 Agrees and disagrees with ideas
THE DISTRACTING VOICE



Ruh-roh! Pulls the
reader away from the
meaning of the text
Zoikes! Begins a
conversation with the
reading, but then
goes off-task with a
question, a
connection, or an idea
Jinkies! The reader is
thinking of something
unrelated to the text
SO, WHAT DO I DO TO GET AWAY
FROM THE DISTRACTING VOICE?
Make a connection
 Make a prediction
 Stop and think
about it
 Ask a question
 Write about it

Visualize it
 Retell it
 Reread it
 Notice patterns in it
 Slow down or
speed up

