• First Phd Program opened in Brazil in 1931.
• Strong tradition in legal theory and legal
philosophy and comparative legal studies.
• Graduated students present in all states of the
federation. More than 300 phd´s and 800
master´s.
• Publishes important review – Revista Brasileira de
Estudos Políticos – founded in 1956.
• 46 full professors and 10 collaborators for 294
students (169 master´s and 125phd´s)

1. Power, Citizenship and Development
in Democratic Rule of Law
• Research concerns the associations between politics,
economics and law in the context of violations to democratic
rule of law by the State and by economic private powers.

2. Human rights and democratic rule
of law
• Research focuses on discourses and hermeneutical challenges to
make human rights effective in all kinds of institutional contexts,
such as legislation, administration, judiciary, mediation, negotiation,
etc. with special emphasis on social participation.

• Discussions on the political and historical foundations
of Law in an interdisciplinary perspective. History as
the space for reflection on the human person, law and
the state.
