• Respiration
– Degradation of a substance such as
glucose to smaller molecules with the
extraction of energy.
• Anaerobic respiration (Fermentation)
– Occurring without the use of molecular
oxygen, O2
• Aerobic respiration
– In the presence of oxygen; requiring O2
Glycolysis
• Glycolysis is the first common
step of both types of respiration
• The enzymatic breakdown of
glucose to pyruvic acid.
• One of the evolutionarily oldest of
the cellular energy-yielding
mechanisms.
