2. Context for PPE work
“I am more than a pillbox. I want to have a say
in my health. I want to be listened to. This is
my health” - Mike, person with HIV
The World Health Organisation defines sexual health as:
''the state of physical, emotional, mental and social well-being
related to sexuality; it is not merely the absence of disease,
dysfunction and infirmity. Sexual health requires a positive,
respectful approach to sexuality and sexual relationships, as well
as the possibility of having pleasurable and safe sexual
experiences, free of coercion, discrimination and violence. For
sexual health to be attained and maintained, the sexual rights of
all persons must be respected, protected and fulfilled.''
3. Why PPE is important for sexual
health in London
Significant impact on health in every borough
Sexual Health has a significant impact on health in every
borough in London. The city is disproportionately
affected by Sexual ill health. This is recognised in the
Mayor's Health Inequalities Strategy (2009):
London has particular challenges. The capital has the highest rates of
new diagnoses of sexually transmitted infections such as Chlamydia,
gonorrhoea and syphilis. London also accounts for 52% of the
country’s known cases of HIV. As with other conditions and diseases,
these London-specific problems disproportionately affect some of
London’s poorest and most socially excluded groups.
3. Why PPE is important for sexual
health in London (2)
• 3 million Londoners per year with sexual health needs
• £400m per year spent on sexual ill health in London
• PPE is about quality, innovation, productivity and
prevention
• Nothing about us without us –understanding and meeting
the needs of clients/users is cost effective. Doing it right
once in the right place, right time, right cost
• CQUIN- Commissioning For Quality and Innovation
• PPI- Living Well London RSCG Patient and Public
Involvement Strategy
• PPE in sexual and reproductive health and HIV/AIDS
services in London: challenges and best practice (2010)
