Sexually Transmitted
Diseases
STD
• Infection spread by having SEX with
another person who is infected.
• SOME are curable , OTHERS are
not
• Those who have it might look
HEALTHY, But they have it!
NON CURABLE:
• HEPATITIS
• AIDS/HIV
AIDS
Acquired
 Not born with the disease compared to most
immune deficient conditions
 *You can only be born with AIDS if your mother had
AIDS when pregnant
Immunodeficiency
 Characterized by a weakened or ineffective immune
system with no resistance to infections.
Syndrome which means:
 AIDS is a combination of signs and symptoms which
occur together due to the HIV infection as well as
many other infections as a result of the
immunodeficiency
AIDS….HIV
HIV stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus
 This virus causes AIDS
 It is an infection of the immune system
 It destroys the body's ability to fight off
infections.
 It remains quiet for a long time
 Drug therapy only destroys the active virus,
DOES NOT CURE
 HIV infects the cells (T Lymphocytes) of
the immune system weakening the entire
system.
AIDS
AIDS
Transmission

Blood or blood
products
 Mother to infant
 Sexual contact
 Sharing of needles or
syringes
AIDS….HIV
HIV has been located in fluids such as:
 blood
 breast milk
 saliva
 semen
 tears
 vaginal fluids
It appears that the disease can only be
transmitted through:
 blood
 blood products
 sexual fluids
AIDS….
The infection can be spread from unprotected sex (sex
without condoms) with an infected partner, including:
• anal intercourse
• oral intercourse
• vaginal intercourse
AIDS….
and is spread from:
• men to men
• men to women
• women to men
• women to women
AIDS….
The virus can enter the body during sex through the:
• lining of the vagina
• mouth
• penis
• rectum
• vulva
SYPHILIS
(CURABLE)
Crabs (Pubic Lice)
(curable with medication)
• Tiny little blood-sucking bugs (lice) that live in pubic hair
• They cause a lot of itching.
• They are transmitted via:
• Skin-to-skin contact with an infected person
• Sleeping on infested bedding
• Wearing infested clothing
• Contact with an infested toilet seat
They can be transmitted even if you use a latex condom to
help prevent other STDs.
HERPES
Bacterial Vaginosis
The risk of acquiring
Bacterial Vaginosis (BV)
is increased by:
•
•
•
changing sexual partners
douching
using intrauterine devices
(IUDs)
The infection can not be
spread from person to
person by casual
contact, such as:
•
•
•
•
clothing
eating utensils
swimming pools
toilet seats
Bacterial Vaginosis
• When different
types of bacteria
outnumber the
normal bacteria,
Lactobacillus, an
imbalance is
caused in the
bacterial
organisms that
exist in the
vagina.
• Caused by:
Hemophilus
ducreyi
Bacterial Vaginosis
Symptoms
• Although more than 50%
of women with Bacterial
Vaginosis (BV) have no
symptoms, when
symptoms do occur they
include the following:
• Excessive, thin gray or
white vaginal discharge
that sticks to the vaginal
walls
• Fishy or musty, unpleasant
vaginal odor, most
noticeable after sex
• Vaginal itching and
irritation
CHANCROID
• soft chancre
• venereal sore
• bacterial disease
causing painful,
irregularly shaped
sores, but is a
localized infection
which can be
treated and cured
and has no longterm effects.
CHANCROID…
First signs of infection appear from
3-5 days and up to 2 weeks
after contact, and usually a
tender, raised bump develops
where the bacteria entered the
body:
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
inside/outside the vagina or
rectum
occasionally on hands, thighs or
mouth
on the penis
Within 1-4 days the bump
transforms into one or more
shallow sores which break open
and deepen, becoming:
filled with pus
inflamed
painful
ruptured
Chancroid…Transmission
Transmitted through the skin by direct
sexual contact with an infected
individual through
• anal sex
• oral sex
• vaginal sex
The infection is spread to other parts of
the body by:
• minor abrasions
• physical contact
• rubbing
• scratching
CHLAMYDIA
• Caused by
Chlamydia
trachomatis
• US: Teenage girls
have the highest
rates of
Chlamydial
infection
regardless of
demographics or
location
CHLAMYDIA…Transmission
Direct person-to-person
contact through:
•
•
Blood
Passing it to a baby during
birth
• Semen from the penis
• Touching eyes when
infected
• Vaginal fluid
Risk Groups
• Babies (from infected
mothers)
• Sexually active people,
regardless of their sexual
preference
• Sexually active teenagers
(about 45%)
Gonorrhea
Bacterium, Neisseria
gonorrhoeae
• second only to Chlamydia
Found in mucous
areas of the body:
•
•
•
•
•
Genital tract
Penis
Rectum
Throat
Vagina
Gonorrhea
(curable with medication)
nicknamed "the clap" or "the drip“ (“Tulo”)
Women often have no symptoms at all or very mild ones.
Symptoms:
• burning during urination
• and/or a vaginal discharge.
Men
• yellow discharge from the urethra, opening in the penis
• burn or hurt to urinate
Gonorrhea
• In Men:
• Creamy or green,
pus-like discharge
from the penis
• Painful urination
(burning
sensation)
• Testicular pain
Gonorrhea
In Women:
• Bleeding between periods
• Creamy or green, pus-like
or bloody vaginal
discharge
• Excessive bleeding during
menstrual period
• Irritation of the vulva
• Lower abdominal pain
• Painful intercourse
• Painful urination (burning
sensation)
• Rectal infection
• Throat infection
Gonorrhea
Rectal infection:
• Constipation
• Creamy, pus-like
discharge
• Itching
• Painful bowel movement
with blood in feces
• Rectal bleeding
• Symptoms usually
appear 2-7 days after
infection in males, but it
can sometimes take up
to 30 days for symptoms
to appear.
Genital Warts
There are more
than 100,
mostly
harmless, types
of Human
Papilloma Virus
(HPV)
GENITAL WARTS
Affected genital area:
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
anus
cervix
penis
rectum
scrotum
vagina
vulva
GENITAL WARTS
• Symptoms may occur
several weeks to months
after being exposed to
Human Papilloma Virus
(HPV) and include:
• Itching or burning around
the sex organs
• Painless growths on damp
moist surfaces (penis &
vagina) begin as tiny, soft,
pink or red spots
• Spots develop into small,
white/yellow/gray bumpy
warts on the sex organs
and anus
• Warts can grow quickly
into irregularly shaped
cauliflower-like masses
