Green building Requirements:
• UCOP announced a green building policy in 2004.
• UCSB committed – all buildings programmed after July 1,
2004 would be LEED NC Silver.
• Pursue certification for existing
buildings as the program develops.

LEED for Existing Buildings at UCSB:
• LEED EB deals with the Existing Building
stock of campus.
• LEED NC only deals with fraction of
UCSB building stock.
• LEED EB focuses on sustainable
operations such as: preventative
maintenance, energy/water efficiency,
waste, purchasing, site maintenance
and cleaning.

New Approach to LEED EB
The Portfolio Program Pilot
• LEED EB was well-received by Facilities and building
occupants.
• Campus will capitalize on success the with the USGBC
Portfolio Program.
• 25 LEED EB buildings in 5 years – 25 by 2012!
• Document LEED credits on a campus-wide basis.

Transitioning from NC to EB
• Bren will be the first to certify under NC and
then go through EB
• Funding for re-commissioning building and
upgrades of MEP systems
• Working with building occupants- purchasing
coordinators, building Engineer, development
officer
• Goal to get Platinum again
Sustainability at UCSB
Challenges Ahead
• Some buildings might not ever meet the energy and
water prerequisites
– Campus has a variety of building types, Energy Star does not
cover them all, utilizing Alternative Compliance Path option
• Working with building occupants consistently- 25
building, not as much hands on time
• Adding QC/QA plans to all credits after initial review by
USGBC
• Some buildings are better than others- building
performance and occupant motivation varies
