+ California’s Common Core Standards Ventura County Office of Education Curriculum Council Meeting September 24, 2010 2 California’s Common Core Standards + Background Content What’s next + Background Timeline 20092010 Nation Early 2009: Council of Chief State School Officers and National Governors Association begin Common Core State Standards September 2009: draft College and Career Readiness Standards September-March 2010: CCSS begins- input from 48 states, K-12 teachers, postsecondary faculty, C&I experts, researchers, national organizations March 2010: Draft CCSS published- 10,000 comments June 2, 2010: Final CCSS released California May 2009: SBE, State Superintendent of Public Education and Governor agree to participate in CCSSO and NGA initiative to develop CCSS as part of RTTT January 2010: Senate Bill X5 1 provides for adoption of CCSS, including formation of an Academic Content Standards Commission. 15% of CA standards may be added June-July 2010: Academic Content Standards Commission develops recommendation, including 15% CA standards August 2, 2010: SBE adopts CCSS, including recommendations from ACSC. SBE directs CDE staff to develop implementation plan (due: 11/10) 4 To date, 36 states + District of Columbia have adopted Common Core Standards Source: www.corestandards.org 5 Common Core Standards Each state can make only a 15% change by adding or deleting standards from the original Common Core California did not delete any of the original Common Core Standards. Instead, we added standards based on the following criteria: Substantively enhance Address a perceived gap Be defensible Keep to classroom practitioners the original standard intact Ensure the rigor of California’s existing standards is maintained 6 + Content English Language Arts and Mathematics Common Core Standards Design Built on the strength of current state standards, the CCSS are designed to be: Focused, coherent, clear and rigorous Internationally Anchored Evidence benchmarked in college and career readiness* and research based 8 9 Overarching Goals for K-12 Common Core Standards Ensure that our students are: Meeting college and work expectations Prepared to succeed in our global economy and society, and Provided with rigorous content and applications of higher knowledge through higher order thinking skills. 10 English Learners and Students with Disabilities Experts in the areas of English learners and Students with Disabilities helped develop these standards so that: Access is improved to provide rigorous academic content standards Expectations are elevated to prepare all students to be college and career ready + Common Core State Standards for Mathematics 11 Overview of K-8 Mathematics Standards Defines what students should understand and be able to do, balancing procedure and understanding Sets grade level standards for K-8 Identifies standards for Algebra I High school standards are organized by conceptual clusters, NOT by course (Number and Quantity, Modeling, Algebra, Geometry, Functions, Statistics and Probability) 12 13 Organization of Mathematics Standards Grade K-8 Standards Overview page Standards by grade level Grade K-8 and High School Standards Domains Additional language or whole standards that are bolded and underlined were added by the California Academic Content Standards Commissions (CACSC) to maintain rigor of California expectations. For more specific information on Mathematics Common Core Standards, please contact Vicki Vierra or Dr. Staci Block at 437-1330, or [email protected] or [email protected]. + Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts and Literacy in History/ Social Studies, Science, and Technical Subjects 14 Overview of K-12 ELA/Literacy Standards Anchored in college and career readiness Focused on text complexity and what students read Addresses reading and writing across the curriculum (including History/Social Science, Science, and Technical Subjects) Emphasize is on the analysis of informational text vs. literacy text (K-5 breakdown is 50:50 and by high school breakdown is a 30:70 favoring informational text) Focus is on writing arguments and drawing evidence from sources Includes required reading of seminal U.S. texts 15 Organization of K-12 ELA/Literacy Standards College and Career Readiness (CCR) Standards Overarching standards for each strand that are further defined by grade-specific standards Grade-Level Standards in English Language Arts K-8, grade-by-grade 9-10 and 11-12 grade bands for high school Four strands: Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening, and Language Standards for Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science, and Technical Subjects Standards are embedded at grades K-5 Content-specific literacy standards are provided for grades 6-8, 9-10, and 11-12 For more specific information on ELA/Literacy Common Core Standards, please contact Angela Baxter, Charice Guerra or Armando Zuñíga at 4371330, or [email protected], [email protected] or [email protected]. 16 Common Core State Standards Evidence Base Standards from individual high-performing countries and provinces were used to inform content, structure, and language. Writing teams looked for examples of rigor, coherence, and progression.
