Test Sequence
AutoTest knows that the test battery is connected to a
good charging system (the service vehicle’s) it now
tests that the battery is accepting charge and tests that it
does not have a bad cell condition.
23
STOP service vehicle
Start TEST vehicle

ENTER
The demonstration test battery does not have a bad cell
and it’s charge acceptance is OK so AutoTest prompts
for the test vehicle to be jump started. The amps
reading at the bottom of the screen can be used to get
an indication of the starter motor current draw during
24
engine cranking.

ENTER
This screen asks the operator to check that the vehicle
will not stall once the jumper leads are removed. When
the charge voltage is OK and the test battery is
accepting a good amount of charge, then the jumper
leads should be removed.

AutoTest now has the test battery connected to the test
vehicle’s charging system. This period of testing is
called dynamic testing. Firstly, AutoTest checks the
alternator to make sure it is charging the test battery
properly.

Testing battery.
Do not stop motor.
Vch 14.22 Ich 13.2

Next, AutoTest checks the battery. The amount of time
AutoTest takes to test the battery depends on the state
of charge of the battery being tested. AutoTest allows
more time for a discharged battery to “come good”
during charge than it does for a well charged battery. 30

The test battery was too discharged to reveal a current

measuring high amps during cranking and charging, it
must be re-zeroed before looking for a small key-off

Connect amps probe.
ENTER
Clamp the Amps probe around all of the wires
connected to the battery negative terminal.
There is no need to zero the probe before connecting
it. Zeroing (placing the amps probe next to the
negative cable first) is only necessary when checking
for small currents like current drain with the key off. 68

Disable the ignition by removing the high tension coil
lead from the distributor and connecting it to ground.
Disable the fuel pump to prevent unburnt fuel
damaging the catalytic converter by removing the fuel
pump relay or fuse. AutoTest automatically detects the
start of cranking and counts down from 15 seconds to
71
show the recommended cranking time remaining.

The results table shows the cranking volts and amps
after 5, 10 and 15 seconds of cranking.
When the amps readings are high, either there is
excessive engine friction placing high loads on the
starter motor or the starter motor is faulty.

The voltage readings can give an indication of the
loaded voltage performance of the battery.
If the battery is fully charged and the amps readings
are around ½ the battery’s rated CCA then the voltage
after 15 seconds is the battery’s Loaded Voltage (LV).
73
LVs below 9.6 volts indicate a reject battery.

If the test battery was rated at 380 CCA (SAE) and it
was fully charged for the test, the results screen above
would indicate a reject battery.
The test battery is delivering plenty of amps and will
start an engine, but it’s voltage isn’t holding up under
74
load, which indicates the battery will soon fail.

When cranking is stopped before 15 seconds (in this
case just after 12 seconds) AutoTest will display as
much data as was gathered during the shortened crank.
Had cranking stopped before 10 seconds (but after 5)
there would only be two rows of results. If cranking
stopped before 5 seconds there would only be one. 75
