“Engaging Your LGBTQ Community
for Equity and Inclusion”
April 29 - May 1, 2015
Our Path:
• Our journey began in 2011 with acknowledging the gap in LGBTQ programming and funding, arming ourselves
with 3 key national studies and engaging in 3 community conversations.
• The mission of the PRIDE Council is:
To leverage community resources, from the corporate, education, health and government sectors to improve the
lives of LGBTQ youth and adults in Delaware.
•
The goals are to:
•
increase the number of LGBTQ youth and adults who are healthy (mentally and physically)
•
to improve the educational environments for LGBTQ youth and reduce the number of high school dropouts
•
offer supports and resources to educators, professionals, parents, adults, youth and the community at large
when addressing LGBTQ concerns
• Key Components of Our Work:

What We Are Facing?
• There was a need for an examination of what, if any, gaps
existed in the Education, Income or Health pillars for the
LGBTQ community in order to mount an appropriate initiative
and fund a program(s) using existing infrastructure.
• In 2012, LGBTQ youth programming or funding was nonexistent in Delaware
• Disparities existed within the healthcare system for the LGBTQ
community – and for Seniors in particular.
PRIDE for Youth
Supports the development and enhancement of Gay Straight Alliances
(GSA’s) in all middle and high schools. This allows for the creation of
a safe space with allies at the administrative and peer levels for
LGBTQ youth to thrive.
• Foster mentoring programs for GSAs and individuals in
coordination with Case Managers from Big Brothers Big Sisters
of Delaware as the statewide lead partner so that every middle
and high school will have a GSA.
• Offering cultural competency in-service training to faculty,
therapists, counselors and onsite wellness center clinicians
using the “ABCs of LGBTQ Youth”, “Transgender 101”
presentations and other credible resources, i.e. Fenway
Institute
