What is the Academic Senate?

What Does it Do?

e Applies to California Community Colleges e Is regulation with the force of law e Is derived by the Board of Governors of the California Community Colleges from the Education Code of the State of California.

TITLE 5 § 53200 - Definitions

The

Academic Senate

is an organization “whose primary function is, as the representative of the faculty, to make recommendations to the administration of a college and the governing board of a district with respect to academic and professional matters.” So . . .

What are “

academic and professional matters

”?

The “ 10 + 1 ” of §53200

 Degree and certificate requirements  Grading policies  Educational program development  Curriculum, including establishing prerequisites  Standards and polices regarding student preparation and success  College governance structures, as related to faculty roles

 Faculty roles and involvement in the accreditation process  Policies for faculty professional development activities  Processes for program review  Processes for institutional planning and budget development

Plus One Other academic and professional matters as mutually agreed upon.

§53200 “Collegial Consultation”

The Board of Trustees is required to

consult collegially

with the Academic Senate and develop policies on academic and professional matters through either or both: 1. Rely primarily upon the advice and judgement of the Academic Senate 2.

Reach

mutual agreement

with the Academic Senate by written resolution, regulation, or policy

TITLE 5 §53203 - Powers

(A) The local governing board shall adopt policies delegating authority and responsibility to its Academic Senate.

(B) Policies in (A) shall be adopted through

collegial consultation

with the Academic Senate.

(C) The Academic Senate has the right to meet with or appear before the local governing board
