The Scottish national flower is the thistle, a prickly-leaved purple flower which was first used in the 15 th defence.

A special criss-cross pattern. There are many different tartan patterns. Each Scottish family or “clan” has its own tartan, e.g. the MacDonald Tartan.

It’s a length woollen cloth (8m), pleated except for sections at each end. A goatskin pouch or sporran is worn at the front of the kilt.

The national musical instrument which once led Scottish soldiers into battle. Not everyone likes the sound but every town has its own bagpipe band.

Before 1707 there was the Scottish monarchy. In 1707 Scotland joined England. The most famous kings today are Macbeth and Mary.

A loch means ‘a lake’ in Scottish Gaelic. Loch Ness is famous because of the monster which is supposed to live there. It is informally called Nessy.
WHISKY
A strong alcoholic drink which gets its special taste from Scotland’s fresh highland water.
They often call it “Scotch”.
