The Explorers
3 Reasons for the Lewis and Clark
Expedition:

See what the U.S had bought
Up the Missouri River
Hard to travel
Up stream rowing and mosquitoes
45 member expedition team
Lewis, Clark, Soldiers,
Frontiersman, Clark’s Slave,
French Fur Trader and his wife
(Sacagawea)
To the Pacific and Back
Sacagawea found her tribe and they
gave the explorers horses
The Nez Perc’e Indians gave them
food when traveling through the
Rocky Mnts
Clark carved in a tree to say he made
it
Explorer’s Legacy
Journey took 2 years and 4 months
Traveled 8,000 miles
Did not find the Northwest Passage
(did not exist)
Californio Missions
Missionaries went to CA from Mexico to
convert Native Americans
Settlers followed them
Newcomers brought diseases and killed
North Americans
Mexico won its independence and CA
became part of Mexico
Settlers were given a rancho
Land given to raise cattle and grow
crops
Life on Ranchos
Hard work and produced everything
they needed to survive
Lived in Adobe Houses (Dirt Floors)
Industry was Cattle Farming
Mexico neglected California

When America took California,
Californio’s became a minority
They gave U.S many things (Names,
Food, and opened itself to the World)

At first they were welcomed
When gold became scarce, they were hated
Immigrants had to pay money to mine and
many left

Opened laundry shops, restaurants and farmed
Turned CA into a farm area

Hard workers and helped economy grow

sounds of their culture
