Chemical Hazards
• Please be conscious of chemical hazards.
• Make sure students realize the severity of
hazards when working with chemicals,
especially concentrated ones.
• MSDS information will be available in the lab
– Familiarize yourself with chemicals you will use in
the lab
– For chemical injuries, give EMS the MSDS
Be familiar with NFPA Ratings & be able to explain them
to students
Chemical Spills
• Step 1 = isolate & contain spill!
• If a small spill occurs, use a spill pad to absorb it
– If you need more than 2 spill pads to fully clean up the
area, call the stockroom to report the spill and get
some help.
• If the spill is very large, use the spill kit if
necessary.
– Call the stockroom for help
– Dispose of all spill pads & spill response materials in
the appropriate waste container.
Chemicals and Equipment
• Get to lab early to check on prep
– Call the stockroom immediately if you need something so
they can bring it down before you start the experiment.
– Call early, so items can be delivered promptly
• Do not send students to retrieve chemicals at the
Stockroom -only certain equipment.
• Also do not send (or allow) students to bring broken
glassware to the stockroom to “show us”. We only need to
see a missing / broken request via the online billing
system or do a “cash and carry transaction” using their
RAM Account.
General Safety Instruction:
•
•
•
•
Read departmental lab policies and safety regulations
Safety Video & questions
Perform evacuation drill
Fill out the medical form and instruct student to keep
on person or in lab notebook.
• Fill out compliance form (check for understanding)
• Notify students of online Safety module that they must
pass.
• Review syllabus
Note: guidelines are posted on Stockroom Homepage
What if my student is not on the
Roster?
• Ask them what section they are registered for
• Have them complete safety training.
• Have them fill out compliance & medical
forms.
– Make sure they put the section they are supposed
to be in on the compliance form or write
“waitlisted” if waitlisted
• Have the students not on the roster leave the
lab before allowing the students whose names
are on the roster to check into lab drawers.
Student Attendance
Account for all students!
Take attendance using the computer attendance
program
Checking into Drawers
• Only assign drawers to students who are on the computer
roster
– Write “wait listed” on those student’s compliance form
who are not on your computer roster
• Have students check their drawer for completeness. This
means take everything out and put back only what is on
the equipment list. When finished:
– Collect the compliance forms
– Immediately following class take ALL compliance forms
to the stockroom.
Compliance Forms
•
•
•
•
•
Each student must fill one out with their names written legibly!
Forms are a permanent record that are kept for 7 years
Must be proper and complete
Plagiarism policy must be signed and dated
Failure to complete properly results in student being unable to be
marked present in subsequent labs
• Send student to stockroom to fix problems indicated by the
attendance program immediately
• Student names would be highlighted in orange
• TA’s must review compliance forms and assure that students
understand all elements on the form. (This is to assure student
understanding )
• Please remember to sign all compliance forms!
Plagiarism Forms
• There are now two copies of the plagiarism form.
• One is the department copy and the other is the
student copy. They are different colors!
• The department copy is on the back of compliance form
• Make sure that you do not give the stockroom the
student’s copy of the plagiarism policy. This is for
them to reference.
• Encourage them to hold on to it so they are fully
aware of our policy.
Note: account hold
This is the
department copy of
the plagiarism form.
Make sure that this
one comes back to
the stockroom after
check-in!
This is the student copy
of the plagiarism
form. Note it is a
different color.
Encourage them to
keep these forms so
that they are aware
of the policy.
Compliance Forms
Quick Quiz!
What is the mistake on the following forms?
No Pencil!
Ink must be used!
Reporting M/B Equipment
If an item is found missing or broken within first 30min
of Lab.
– Check to make sure item really is missing or broken
• This is very important because of the billing process
– Fill out MISSING/BROKEN request form online
– Student must come to the stockroom immediately for a
new item
– In this situation the student will not be charged for said
missing/broken item as they have not used equipment yet.
* TA should check all communal equipment in the lab for breakage
prior to the lab class. Be observant during your lab class and report
any breakage of communal equipment to the Stockroom (provide
the student name and ID # and description of broken equipment).
Avoiding Theft from Student Drawers
Remind 226, 292 & 425 students they need a lock
immediately
– Students are responsible for buying their own locks
Rooms 101, 150, 151,160, 161,163, 165 and Morrill labs
– Remind all students to lock their drawers
– They will be held responsible for the contents of the
drawers.
– All drawers have combination locks and students
should be given the combination during check-in
– Combinations to all in-use drawers can be found in TA
Book located in the TA drawer.
Student Safety Training
• To ensure that Students fully understand and
comply with our safety policies they will need
to pass our online safety quiz.
Stockroom Policies
• Stockroom Hours are 8am -5pm (Mon and Wed 8am to 8pm)
– If something is broken after 5pm, TA should still report via the online system
(also e-mail the stockroom) and the stockroom will replace item the following
morning and bill appropriate student
• The stockroom does not accept cash
– Remind students that cash is only used during your graduate student sale of
the safety eyewear.
– Remind students to put money on their RAM account.
• See departmental policies or stockroom web page on how to do this
• Billing for broken/missing items will be posted via stockroom
webpage.
– Periodically show the bill list to the students
– Students receive a registration hold on their “e-campus account” if their bill(s)
are not paid
