A Brief History and Explanation of
Pulsed Electro-Magnetic Field
(PEMF) Therapy

Five hundred years ago,
Paracelsus, a Swiss physician and alchemist,
wondered if diseases could be treated by
magnetism. He used natural lodestones as
these were the best magnets available in
those days.

During the 1800's, early pioneers of our
modern technical world such as Gauss,
Weber, Faraday and Maxwell made many of
the discoveries relating electricity to
magnetism, one of the more interesting
theories being that of the "Magnetic Field
Deficiency Syndrome." This idea was picked
up in our century by Dr. Kyochi Nakagawa
of Japan who offers this phenomenon as an
explanation of bio-magnetics.

Over the last hundred years, the earth’s
magnetic field has weakened on average by
about 6 percent and in the last thousand
years it has fallen nearly 30 percent. Due to
this decline in strength of our planet’s
magnetic field, Dr. Nakagawa suggests that
there is a human health side effect.
He argues that a falling magnetic field puts us
at risk since humans evolved in a magnetic
field, thus it is necessary for proper health
and magnetic therapy can make up the deficit.

For two hundred years, Electro-Magnets have been
built from coils of wire powered by electricity; Nikolai
Tesla being the first to introduce the powers of this
technology.
We all know of the “Tesla coil.” Through pulsing ElectroMagnetic energy, it is possible to produce rapidly
changing magnetic fields. This opens a whole new
world of medical applications for as has been
discovered, by changing magnetic fields, we can induce
tiny electrical currents in human tissue.
As far back as 1890, the American Electro-Therapeutic
Association conducted annual conferences on the
therapeutic use of electricity and electrical devices by
physicians on ailing patients.

Pulsing Electro-Magnetic therapy is now
FDA approved for the healing of non-healing
bone issues, incontinence, and migraines
The interest in PEMF upon health is steadily
building in medical sectors as attested to
by the variety of research studies and clinical
trials using Pulsed Electro-Magnetic Field Therapy. Literally thousands of
such tests have been conducted internationally, including over 3,000
University level double-blind studies using PEMF for a wide array of
ailments ranging From Arthritis to Vision.

Pulsed Electro-Magnetic Fields -PEMF
• All energy is electromagnetic in nature, and nothing happens
in the body without an electromagnetic exchange between
cells. We are all familiar with the electrocardiogram (EKG) and
electroencephalograph (EEG) tests, which measure the
electromagnetic activity of the heart and brain, respectively.
• When electromagnetic activity ceases, life ceases.
Electromagnetic energy controls our chemistry. Disruption of
this energy in cells causes impaired cell metabolism, and if our
cells are not healthy, our body is not healthy, in whole or in
part.

So what is this technology? It’s a device that makes pulsating
electromagnetic fields — or PEMF for short.
If you have ever held two magnets in your hands, tried to force
them together, and felt a resistance between them, then you
have experienced a magnetic field.
The Earth has its own magnetic field, produced by fluxes in the
molten metal in the core of the planet. The presence of this
field is what causes a compass to rotate so that the ‘north pole’
of the compass points roughly north.
An electromagnetic field is a physical field produced by moving
electrical charges. It affects the behavior of any other charged
objects in the vicinity of the field.

Electro Smog
It is important to distinguish between the electromagnetic fields we
use for therapeutic purposes, and other man-made electromagnetic
fields from power lines, microwave ovens, cell phones, etc., which
can cause damage to our bodies. The PEMF device produces safe,
natural electromagnetic fields which are of lower frequency, and are
complementary to the chemistry and functions of the body.
• There are distinct differences in the effects of devices at various
frequency ranges, from extremely low frequencies (ELFs), to very
low frequencies (VLFs), to microwave level frequencies, radio
frequencies, infrared and ultraviolet frequencies, and more.

• Most magnetic field exposure risk comes from power lines,
WIFI and cell phones, because of their particular exposure
times or field strengths and frequencies.
• These frequencies and intensities, known as ‘electro-smog’,
can induce heat in the tissues of the body and modify genes,
and therefore can damage cells.
• The frequency of PEMF most closely resembles the Earths
natural frequency between 1 and 50, while the cell phones are
above a frequency of 600

What happens during a PEMF treatment?
The PEMF device sends a pulsing magnetic field through a soft, flexible rubber coil up
to 16 inches deep into the body. As the pulsing magnetic field pulses on, the cell
membrane is gently pulled by the magnetic field. On the off phase of the pulse, the
cell membrane is relaxed.
As the cells expand and relax, the cell membrane becomes more permeable, allowing
the cell to release waste, toxins and inflammation and receive oxygen and nutrients.
This receiving of oxygen and releasing of waste is what increases the natural charge of
the cell. As the cell reaches it's natural charge, the message of pain to the brain is
reduced and the cells return to optimal health.
This cellular exercise is what is profoundly beneficial and unique to PEMF. Because the
magnetic wave effects only the cells that have a low level of charge, the damaged cells
are the only ones that show pulsing or twitching. Because of this , the PEMF is very
effective in detecting the location of the damaged cells (areas of soreness).

How long does a treatment take?
Normal treatment time for a whole body treatment is 30-45 minutes for
equines, 20-60 minutes for humans and small animals depending on how
many areas are sore and how chronic the soreness or injury is. On
average, each sore area requires at least 2 minutes and no more than 10
minutes per session.
If the area is still sore, it is better to wait at least 3 to 48 hours and treat
the area again.

How is a PEMF Therapy Treatment performed?
Using a soft, flexible rubber "coil“ the PEMF device is gently placed over
the body. This coil sends a wide, magnetic field up to 16 inches deep into
the body to the cellular level.
As the coil is placed on or over the body, the magnetic pulses are adjusted
to a very comfortable level. It is safe, non-invasive and no medication or
sedation is required.
Horses people and pets LOVE PEMF therapy!
People and animals find the treatment very relaxing as the pulsing relieves
pain and releases inflammation within minutes of treatment and often
refer to it as being as relaxing as a "Spa Treatment" or Massage.
LifePulse Equine PEMF Training Module 2
How does a PEMF Device detect and show areas of soreness or
sensitivity?
Muscle tissue pulses or twitches in sore or damaged areas because of
Cellular membrane movement.
So if you are treating a horse, you run the coil over the whole body and
look for areas of twitching and come back and stay on that area for at
least 2 minutes
LifePulse Equine PEMF Training Module 2
Why treat the whole horse when the problem is in one area?
PEMF creates a systemic response by increasing the overall oxygen level in
the blood which acts like "Turbo-Charging" the WHOLE body. Because of
this, many issues, not just the targeted ones, also experience
improvement.
By increasing the blood oxygen in the whole body, the sensitive area
continues to be helped as super oxygenated blood from the rest of the
body continues to flow through the area, for up to 72 hours.
LifePulse Equine PEMF Training Module 2
When will the results of the
treatment be seen or felt?
Results are immediate. After PEMF
treatment, the white blood cells
are full of oxygen and no longer
stick together.
Circulation will continue to
improve for up to 72 hours after a
whole body treatment.
LifePulse Equine PEMF Training Module 2
Can PEMF treatments be done right at the SHOW or Event?
A horse can be worked immediately after or before a treatment.
PEMF helps horses to loosen up and relax at a show, relieves
their pain & stiffness and helps them recover faster. For optimal
performance, we recommend at least 3 treatments over 3 to 6
days.
We do PEMF treatments on our horses every day at H/J shows
and they come out of their stalls "Fresh as a Daisy" each
morning! For Eventers, it is great to do a treatment before
Dressage, after XC and after Showjumping.
LifePulse Equine PEMF Training Module 2
How long will the results last?
Results can last any where from a day to weeks or permanently,
depending on the problem and its severity. Many soreness's can be
relieved with 1 to 3 treatments. For most performance horses at a show,
great benefits of increase range of motion and improved performance are
achieved with 3 treatments.
More chronic soreness or injuries take longer, but the general rule of
thumb is that an injury like a torn suspensory can be healed in half the
normal time it would take without PEMF treatment.
LifePulse Equine PEMF Training Module 2
Is the treatment the same as magnetic blankets and boots?
While the therapy is similar, the difference is in the delivery method and the ability to focus the right
level of power to the specific area that needs it. While the Blankets provide a low, uniform level of
power, it may not be adequate for deeper injuries or in denser parts of the body. The power of PEMF is
measured in Gauss, like distance is measured in Feet. The cells need at least 25 Gauss in order to effect
cellular repair, while it is believed that 50 to 85 Gauss is considered an optimal level. As the Magnetic
field travels away from the coil or through denser tissue such as bone, the power diminishes. So it is
important to be able to deliver the right level of power to the damaged areas. So the main areas of
difference are as follows:
1) EquiPulse has the ability to detect where a horse is sore or injured because only the sore areas will
twitch or pulse.
2) EquiPulse is an easily adjustable, high-powered device. This ability to adjust the intensity provides
the optimal level of power to a specific area and receive immediate results. .
3) EquiPulse can provide the optimal level of power to a specific point anywhere on a horse. This is
particularly useful when treating areas like; around the head and neck, hamstrings, necks, legs, abscess in
hoofs and acupressure points for a wide variety of issues such as colic and calming points.

EquiPulse PEMF Therapy vs. Shockwave?
As explained above in "what happens when treating a horse..", the cellular exercise that rehabilitates cells is unique to
PEMF. The following are the main points of differentiation compared to Shockwave:
•
EquiPulse has the ability to detect where a horse is sore or injured because only the sore areas will twitch or pulse.
Shockwave has no ability to detect soreness, just treatment of a specific point.
• EquiPulse can be used on the whole body. Shockwave can only be done on a specific point that are relatively insensitive,
such as back or legs.
• EquiPulse is Non-invasive, NO sedation is required, while horses quickly relax and enjoy the treatment. Shockwave is
invasive and painful as it creates energy by concussion and sound waves.
• EquiPulse does not require sedation and has no potential to damage calls. Shockwave requires sedation. Because of the
damaging potential and required sedation, the treatment must be performed by a Veterinarian.
• EquiPulse has a wide focal area and the wave area does not diminish as it penetrates the body. Shockwave has a small
cone shaped focal area of a couple of inches wide at the skin that goes down to a point at it's deepest penetration.
• EquiPulse magnetic wave travels up to 16 inches into the body. Shock wave has a maximum penetration of about 4
inches.
LifePulse Equine PEMF Training Module 2
EquiPulse PEMF vs. Laser Treatments?
While both the laser and EquiPulse deliver increased energy to areas of need, the following are the
main points of differentiation:
• EquiPulse has the ability to detect where a horse is sore or injured because only the sore areas will
twitch or pulse. Laser has no ability to detect soreness, just treatment of a specific point.
• EquiPulse has a wide focal area and the wave area does not diminish as it penetrates the body.
Laser has a very small focal area of less than in inch.
• EquiPulse magnetic wave travels up to 16 inches into the body. Laser has a limited penetration of less
than 2 inches, unless the power is increased, which increases the potential to damage the cells at the
surface.
• EquiPulse can be used on the whole body and takes 30 to 45 minutes for a full body treatment. Since
Laser has such a small focal point, it takes a long time to treat a larger area making full body
treatments not likely.
