This is my 16 th year of teaching I was in the Colonial School District for 12 years, and have been at BME for 4 I have taught 8 th grade Science, 3 rd , 2 nd , and 4 th grades I am the mother of 2 Appo students, and the aunt of another Teaching runs in my family

Purposes- Narrative, Persuasive, Informative, Expository 6 traits- Ideas, Organization, Word Choice, Sentence Fluency, Voice, Conventions Rubrics- used for feedback and assessment
Writing Academy
Working with Words
Traditional Spelling- test each week on 5 most frequently missed words and 5 new words with the same pattern. Also, students will do one dictation sentences to practice grammar.

Guided Reading
Reading Text book-Reading Street has short stories are used to teach comprehension skills on grade level Whole group instruction and small groups Fiction and non-fiction reading is equally represented throughout the series.
Tests will include vocabulary, skills, and strategies covered during the week. However, unit tests will use a new piece of text to test student understanding.

Self Selected Reading
Apply guided reading strategies to personal reading level. Student and class goals are set Accelerated Reading (AR)- students are expected to read and test on books approximately every week or more often. The tests are on the computers and reports will be shared with parents on progress every few weeks.

Where was Martin’s family travelling?
Martin’s family was traveling west. In the book, he used a compass to point him westward. I learned in 3 rd grade that settlers travelled west in search of a better life.
Math
TERC Series used to introduce, teach, and reinforce math concepts Hands-on lessons Big Concepts- Multiplication, Division, Fractions, Decimals, Geometry, Money, Patterns, and Probability Please review telling time with your children.
IXL
Computer program that reinforces fact fluency Student practices independently skills that will be helpful to him or her.
Progress is tracked by the computer and reports will be generated every few weeks
Science
Smithsonian and Foss Kits- Structures of Life, Magnetism and Electricity, Land and Water Crayfish, Bess Beetles, Circuit boards, and Stream Tables
Social Studies
History, Economics, Geography, and Civics 1700-1850 Focus on events in US history and how they relate to Delaware Government set up and citizenship Goods, services, opportunity costs
Homework Policy
Agenda books will be filled out at the end of the day Approximately 40 minutes of homework each day Spelling due at the end of the week Reading 20 minutes each day- AR or self selected (

Talent Development
Will begin in September on Tuesdays for 1 hour Four sessions-the first three are exploratory and the third is project based Student selected class based on their interests
Positive Behavior Support
Dolphin golds- given to students throughout the day by teachers recognizing responsible, respectful, and/or ready behavior Monthly Assemblies- held to recognize individual students and classes for the 3R’s
Additional Support
Reading support- Mrs. Plummer is our reading specialist and identifies students with needs in reading for small group support. In addition, teachers monitor on going progress of all students and provide in class support.
Enrichment- Groups are formed based on student needs and meet 4 times a week for a half hour.
Guidance- Small groups to help students with social needs in specific areas English Language Support- students as English as a second language will be support by ESL teacher
Additional Activities
Library Lunch Bunch- students interested in doing novel studies meet with Mrs. Haney weekly during lunch Basketball Club- Mrs. Sumner will put a letter out for sign ups. It is held after school. Drama Club- Mr. Jalbert holds try outs in the later part of the year for the School Play.
Chorus- Mr. Jalbert will send out information on sign ups Band- Information will be coming regarding sign ups
