Teacher Instructions
This game helps students review sentence structures including the following: simple, compound,
complex, and compound-complex. All that you will need is the ability to project a power point
presentation, a ball (soft texture), some dark tape, and a trash can. Although it’s optional, you
may want to provide prizes for the winning team.
1. Divide your class into small groups. Each group is a team and can create a name to be called. It
helps to put mixed-ability students in the same group.
2. Mark your floor with three pieces of tape: one at 15 feet, one at 10 feet, and the closest tape
at 5 feet from the trash can. These are the lines that the students stand behind for shooting the
ball.
3. Before the game, review the following slides: rules for the students, teacher instructions, and
a key.
4. In this game, there are four rounds. For the first two rounds, students simply identify whether
the sentences as simple or compound; in the third round, they identify whether the sentences
are complex or compound-complex, and the difficulty increases in the fourth round when they
have to identify all four structures.
5. Students shoot baskets after each round. Designate someone to keep cumulative score for
each team as the game progresses. The team with the highest score at the end of the game
wins.
It’s easy to play, and the students love it!
