Romans 15:4-6

“For whatsoever things were written
aforetime were written for our learning,
that we through patience and comfort of
the scriptures might have hope. Now the
God of patience and consolation grant you
to be likeminded one toward another
according to Christ Jesus: That ye may
with one mind and one mouth glorify God,
even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Introduction






Many warnings of false ideas!
False teachers are deceptive!
They can captivate!
Some are held hostage!
Many are blinded by false doctrine!
Error is the desire of some!
4
Colossians 2:4-8

“And this I say, lest any man should beguile you
with enticing words. For though I be absent in the
flesh, yet am I with you in the spirit, joying and
beholding your order, and the stedfastness of your
faith in Christ. As ye have therefore received Christ
Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him: Rooted and built
up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have
been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.
Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy
and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the
rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.”

The Foundational Principle
The Sovereignty of God

“The confession of the sovereignty of
God has become the hallmark of
authentic Calvinism”


Evangelical Dictionary of Theology, p. 1039
What is meant by the term “Sovereignty of
God”?
10
Westminster Confession of Faith

“God, from all eternity, did, by the
most wise and holy counsel of His
own will, freely, and unchangeably
ordain whatsoever comes to pass…He
has not decreed anything because He
foresaw it as future, or as that which
would come to pass on such
conditions…By the decree of God, for

the manifestation of His glory, some
men are predestinated to everlasting
life; and others foreordained to
everlasting death…their number so
certain and definite that it
cannot be either increased or
diminished.”

Westminster Confession of Faith, 1968
12
The Sovereignty of God?

What is meant by Calvinists?




That whatever God wants happens.
If anything happens, the event was determined
and caused by God.
They reason that those who will be lost or saved
has already been determined by God.
Does God do everything he has the power to
do?

Matt. 3:9; 4:1-11, esp. vss. 3, 6, 9
13
The Sovereignty of God?

This idea is the soil this TULIP is rooted in?



If everything God wants happens, then everything
that happens is the will of God!
This idea is false to the core!
Many bad things happen to people
because of their own choices which are
contrary to God’s will!


Israelites - Heb. 4:1-11; 1 Cor. 10:1-12
2 Pet. 3:9; Matt. 7:12-29; 2 Thess. 1:7-9

Andrea Yates

Andrea Yates, a Houston, Texas resident, is known for killing of her five
young children on June 20, 2001, by drowning them in the bathtub in her
house.

She had been suffering for years with severe postpartum depression and
psychosis.

Convicted of capital murder in 2002 and sentenced to life in prison with the
possibility of parole after 40 years.

Yates' conviction was later overturned on appeal.

On July 26, 2006, a Texas jury ruled Yates to be not guilty by reason of
insanity. She was consequently committed by the court to the North Texas
State Hospital, Vernon Campus, a high-security mental health facility in
Vernon, Texas

otal Hereditary Depravity

This point alleges that humans are
totally depraved!

“As a result of this inborn corruption,
the natural man is totally unable to do
anything good…the sinner is so
spiritually bankrupt that he can do
nothing pertaining to his salvation” –

The Five Points of Calvinism, Steele/Thomas, p. 25
17
otal Hereditary Depravity

“Man, by his fall into a state of sin,
has wholly lost all ability of will of any
spiritual good accompanying
salvation…is not able by his own
strength to convert himself, or to
prepare himself thereunto.”

- Westminster Confession

otal Hereditary Depravity

“… we are condemned before we have
done good or evil; under the curse ere
we know what it is…” - John Wesley

Wesley on Original Sin, P. 340
19
otal Hereditary Depravity
What Does The Bible Say?
 Sin is committed, not inherited!

Who did Adam & Eve inherit sin from?



We inherit the consequences of sin – not the
guilt of sin!



They had no physical father or mother!
Created by God – Gen. 1:26, 27
Certain physical traits are inherited!
Many suffer from the consequences of sins of others!
One CHOOSES to do evil!

Isa. 59:2; Eph. 2:1-3; 1 Jn. 3:4
20
otal Hereditary Depravity
What Does The Bible Say?
 Little children are innocent not
depraved!

No Bible evidence of depravity at birth!

Not born depraved – not able to choose good or evil.


Duet 1:39; Eccl. 7:29; Matt. 18:3
If children are born sinners then they are little
depraved devils in diapers!

Matt. 18:3
21
otal Hereditary Depravity
What Does The Bible Say?

“The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The
son shall not bear the iniquity of the
father, neither shall the father bear the
iniquity of the son: the righteousness of
the righteous shall be upon him, and
the wickedness of the wicked shall be
upon him.”

nconditional Election
 Known as the “doctrine of predestination”!
 This point alleges that God elected some to
be saved and excluded others.
 Those excluded are lost!
 They have no hope of salvation!
 Their election by God is unconditional!
 JW’s claim that only the 144,000 will go to
heaven!
 Rev. 14:1-2


“God, from all eternity, did, by the most wise
and holy counsel of His own will, freely, and
unchangeably ordain whatsoever comes to
pass…He has not decreed anything because He
foresaw it as future, or as that which would
come to pass on such conditions…By the
decree of God, for the manifestation of His
glory, some men are predestinated to
everlasting life; and others foreordained
to everlasting death…their number so
certain and definite that it cannot be either
increased or diminished.”

Westminster Confession of Faith, 1968
Steele/Thomas Quote

“God could have chosen to save all men
(for He had the power and authority to
do so) or He could have chosen to save
none (for He was under no obligation to
show mercy to any)-but he did neither.
Instead, He chose to save some and to
exclude others…”

imited Atonement
 Who did Christ die for? Only the elect?
 Is the atonement of His shed blood limited?
 The claim of Calvinists…
 “Christ’s redeeming work was intended to save
the elect only and actually secured salvation for
them. His death was a substitutionary sacrifice of
the penalty of sin in place of certain specified
sinners…” – Steel/Thomas, p. 17
32
imited Atonement
What does the Bible say?
 “But we see Jesus, who was made a
little lower than the angels for the
suffering of death, crowned with
glory and honour; that he by the
grace of God should taste death for
every man” - Heb. 2:9
 Others…
33
imited Atonement
What does the Bible say?
 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only
begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him
should not perish, but have everlasting life”
 Jn. 3:16
 Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came
upon all men to condemnation; even so by the
righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men
unto justification of life.
 Rom. 5:18
34
imited Atonement
What does the Bible say?
 “And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not
for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole
world.”
 1 Jn. 2:2
 “For the love of Christ constraineth us; because we
thus judge, that if one died for all, then were all
dead: And that he died for all, that they which live
should not henceforth live unto themselves, but
unto him which died for them, and rose again.”
 2 Cor. 5:14-15
35
imited Atonement
What does the Bible say?
 “For ye are all the children of God by faith
in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as have
been baptized into Christ have put on
Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek,
there is neither bond nor free, there is
neither male nor female: for ye are all one
in Christ Jesus. And if ye be Christ's, then
are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according
to the promise.” - Gal. 3:26-29
36
imited Atonement
the elect
What does the Bible say?
 “Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience
by the things which he suffered; And being made
perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation
unto all them that obey him” - Heb. 5:8-9
 “The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as
some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to
us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but
that all should come to repentance.” – 1 Pet. 3:9

rresistible Grace
 This idea says the God saves sinners even if they
have no desire to be saved.
 This is the “direct operation of the Holy Spirit” idea!
 This rules out the desire and will of man to be saved!
 One then cannot resist the Spirit or Grace of God.
 Steele/Thomas say…
 “The Spirit is in no way dependent upon their help or
cooperation for success in His work of bringing the [the
elect] to Christ,” p. 49
39
rresistible Grace

(literally
or figuratively):--go
out, quench.
 The
Spirit can
be resisted!
 “Ye stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears,
ye do always resist the Holy Ghost: as your fathers
did, so do ye.” – Acts 7:51
 “Quench not the Spirit.” – 1 Thess. 5:19

from the faith, giving heed to seducing
spirits, and doctrines of devils;
Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their
conscience seared with a hot iron”
Are “seducing spirits” in opposition to
the Holy Spirit?
42
Acts 20:28-32

“Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the
flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you
overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath
purchased with his own blood. For I know this, that
after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in
among you, not sparing the flock. Also of your own
selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to
draw away disciples after them. Therefore watch, and
remember, that by the space of three years I ceased
not to warn every one night and day with tears. And
now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the
word of his grace, which is able to build you up, and
to give you an inheritance among all them which are
sanctified.”

 This is the “once saved always saved” idea.
 Dr. Albert Gardner, while President of a Baptist
College in Lakeland, Florida was asked…
 “Is the eternal salvation of the child of God, saved by the
blood, absolutely unconditional in that he is not required to
do anything to go to Heaven?”
 He answered – “YES!”

Quote Of Sam Morris

"We take the position that a Christian's sins do not damn his
soul. The way a Christian lives, what he says, his character,
his conduct, or his attitude toward other people have nothing
whatever to do with the salvation of his soul... All the prayers
a man may pray, all the Bibles he may read, all the churches
he may belong to, all the services he may attend, all the
sermons he may practice, all the debts he may pay, all the
ordinances he may observe, all the laws he may keep, all the
benevolent acts he may perform will not make his soul one
whit safer; and all the sins he may commit from idolatry to
murder will not make his soul in any more danger...The way
a man lives has nothing whatever to do with the salvation of
his soul...The way I live has nothing whatsoever to do with
the salvation of my soul." (Do A Christian's Sins Damn His Soul?,
Sam Morris, First Baptist Church, Stamford, Texas).

What does the Bible say?
 “But I discipline my body and bring it into
subjection, lest, when I have preached to
