to sign up
• You can enter details such as where
you live and what school you go to
• Unless you change security settings,
anyone can view your details
(including your photo’s)
• Facebook can provide contact with
strangers
Social Media & Networking continued
• Snapchat allows you to send a video or photo
where the recipient can only view the image for a
few seconds before it is ‘deleted’
• Chatroulette is an online chat website that pairs
random people from around the world together
for webcam-based conversations.
• Omegle is a free online chat website that allows
users to communicate with strangers
without registering, randomly pairing users in oneon-one chat sessions where they chat anonymously
using the handles "You" and "Stranger“.

Sharing
Signing Up for Social Media
• Creating a Facebook account with false information - particularly kids
under 13 who lie about their age to join - is a violation of the social network's
terms and conditions.
• When you use Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, Google+ etc, your information is still
stored and can be retrieved even after you have deleted or removed it.
• Once you’ve pressed send you NEVER get control back!
Internet Safety at School
Filtered internet
Filtering
• It is very easy to accidently stumble upon something
inappropriate on the internet
• No internet filter is 100% accurate
• Before hitting enter, think about the results that may appear
• TalkTalk on/off for the whole network. BT, Virgin, Sky and
Orange offer device by device solutions
• Google offer a child friendly search engine where safe search
is always on: www.safesearchkids.com
CEOP film example – Jigsaw (Key Stage 2)
Practical Steps
• Be involved in your child’s online life - Talk to them about what they’re
doing, if they know you understand they are more likely to approach you if
they need support.
• Set boundaries in the online world just as you would in the real world.Think
about what they might see, what they share, who they talk to and how long
they spend online.
• Know what connects to the internet and how. Nowadays even the TV
connects to the internet. Your child will use all sorts of devices and gadgets;
make sure you’re aware of which ones can connect to the internet
• Consider the use of parental controls on devices that link to the internet.
The TV, laptops, computers, consoles and mobile phones.
• Emphasise that not everyone is who they say they are. Make sure your child
knows never to meet up with someone they only know online
Reporting to CEOP
• If you are concerned about a child’s activity on the internet you can
make a report to CEOP
