Muscle Tissue
By Kyle, Jordan, Claire and Chloe.
Properties of Muscle tissue
•
Properties of cardiac muscle
•
In the body, there are three distinct types of muscle tissue. Skeletal muscle contracts to perform external
body movements. Smooth muscle causes peristaltic waves in veins, arteries and the alimentary canal.
Cardiac muscle causes the heart to beat. Characteristics of cardiac muscle include striation, i.e., alternating
light and dark bands perpendicular to the fiber; centrally located nuclei; branched cells; and intercalated
discs, which separate individual cells. Properties of cardiac muscle are slightly different. They include
excitability, conductivity, contractility and rhythmicity.
•
Properties of skeletal
•
Skeletal muscle is a form of striated muscle tissue which is under the control of the somatic nervous
system; that is to say, it is voluntarily controlled. It is one of three major muscle types, the others being
cardiac and smooth muscle. As their name suggests, most skeletal muscles are attached to bones by
bundles of collagen fibers known as tendons.
•
Smooth muscle properties
•
Smooth muscle has some unique properties, such as low energy usage, ability to maintain contraction
over long periods, and the stress-relaxation response. Tie these properties to the function of smooth
muscle in the body.
What is the job of the muscle tissue
• The job of muscle tissue is to expand and contract in a way that pulls or
pushes joints and bones to allow your body to move the way it does. It
also helps to keep the body warm and can be broken down to become
nourishment in times of extreme starvation.
Cells in the muscle tissue

There are three basic types of cell in the muscle tissue. They are called Skeletal,
Smooth and Cardiac cells.
Skeletal Cells are what moves the bones in the body. They are voluntary striated
muscle's and are striped. These muscles consist of 23% of a woman’s body weight
and 40% of a man’s.
Smooth muscle cells are involuntary and lines the blood vessels, stomach,
digestive tract and other organs, such as contracting the uterus during childbirth.
These are not striped.
Cardiac muscles are only found in the heart and they are what pumps the blood
throughout the body. They are a mix between a smooth and striped muscle.
Muscle tissue in the organs
• The muscle tissue is a part of the muscular system.
• The muscle organ is mainly made up of skeletal
muscle tissue, nerves, vascular and other connective
components.
• Cardiac muscles are found in the heart.
• Smooth muscles are found in various parts of the
body such as arteries, the bladder, digestive tract and
some other parts of the body.
