History
How was the grave at Sutton Hoo discovered?
Sutton Hoo is the name of a hillside in Sussex where there were
several ancient burial mounds.
In 1939 the owner of the land, Mrs. Pretty, asked some
archaeologists to dig up one of the mounds.
Other mounds had been dug up before, but nothing interesting had
been found.
This was because the things in the other mounds had been stolen long
ago.
But this mound had not had anything stolen from it. It was full of
interesting artefacts.
However, there was no body in the grave, not even a skeleton. Only
the objects in the grave could provide clues to who was buried there.

History
What was in the grave?
The earth in the grave was in an unusual shape, as if something had
been lying there and made a mark.
Can you guess what it might have been?
Here is a clue:
It was a ship!
The wooden ship had rotted away,
but the mark it made in the earth
could still be seen.
