Presented by: Mark Cerutti, Jerrilyn Ewing,
LaRae Blomquist, and Mark Freathy

Outcomes:
• Share significant shifts in math
• Identify what you can do to help
your child at home
• Provide CCSS parent resources

Ponder
this!
Create a math scenario that
uses this number.
What operation comes between the
whole number and the fraction?
Write an expression that shows this relationship.
Convince your partner that this is true.
EGUSD Math Plan 2013-2014
K-6 Goals: Full implementation of CCSS using
“GoMath” curriculum.
7-8 Goals: Implementation of Standards for
Mathematical Practices. Field test GoMath at
6 middle schools.
9-12 Goals: Implementation of Standards for
Mathematical Practices.
Three Tenets of the Common Core
“Rigor”
“Focus”
“Coherence”
Goals of the EGUSD Math Plan
2013-2014
Support classroom instruction that
promotes “rigor” as defined in CCSS.
Conceptual
Understanding
Procedural Fluency
Application &
Modeling
Goals of the EGUSD Math Plan
2013-2014
Support classroom instruction that
promotes “focus” as defined in CCSS.
The curriculum must
include adequate
depth. (see rigor)
Focus refers to grade
level standards or
“Horizontal Alignment.”
Allows teachers to
spend more time on
fewer standards.
Allow time for the kinds of
rich classroom discussion
and interaction that
support the Standards for
Mathematical Practice
(SMP) and develop
students’ broader
mathematical
understanding
Goals of the EGUSD Math Plan
2013-2014
Support classroom instruction that
promotes “coherence” as defined in CCSS.
The curriculum has
logical progressions
from less sophisticated
topics to more
sophisticated ones.
Coherence refers to how
the standards are
organized across grade
levels or “Vertical
Alignment.”
Teachers understand
standards by topics
that include at least a
grade level above and
below their current
teaching assignment.
Where Have We Been?
EGUSD Instructional Focus
in 2011-2013 Math Plan
• Use Multiple Representations/Side by Side
Instructional model
• Develop fractional/relational thinking
• Focus on Number Sense: Students build
mathematical intuition and flexibility.
• Develop Language Rich Classrooms
What’s new for 2013-2014?

Components of the EGUSD Math Plan
2013-2014
What’s new for 2013-2014?
• Implement the Standards for
Mathematical Practice
• Implement the “Formative Assessment
Cycle”
• Start creating SMARTER Balanced type
assessment questions
What can parents do to help with math
work at home?
Ask your child:
• How did you do that?
• How do you know that is right?
• Is there another way you can do that?
More prompting questions:
• What do you see?
• What do you know?
• What do you need to know?
• Can you draw a picture of that?
• What will you specifically ask your teacher tomorrow?
What do you want to know?
In order to provide
you with specific
information that
you want to know,
please write your
question(s) on the
index card that we
will collect.
