AIMING OFF AND MISS DRILLS
REVISION – STOPPAGE DRILLS
If
a rifle has no rounds in the
chamber and no rounds in the
magazine what do you need to
do?
Fit
a new magazine as the one you
have is empty!
The
AIM of this lesson is to teach you
how to correct errors by altering your
POA (Point of Aim)
The REASON WHY is so when you are
shooting you will know what to do if
you are not hitting the target
The INCENTIVE is that you will be a
better shot and may get a badge.
INTRODUCTION
When
shooting the wind will effect the
flight of the bullet.
You need to be able to counter act this
movement so your first round hits the
target where you want it to.
You also need to know what to do if the
round does not hit the target.
AIMING OFF FOR ELEVATION (HEIGHT) AND
DIRECTION
Errors in elevation (height) and direction can be
overcome by changing your POA.
E.g. If your shot hits 300mm above and
100mm right of your POA re-aim 300mm below
and 100mm left of your original POA.
Do not apply this principle if shooting to get a
grouping.

AIMING OFF FOR WIND
If
wind is blowing directly in front of a
range and you are firing from more than
100m you need to change your POA.
To allow for this aim off into the wind.
HOW CAN YOU TELL WHICH DIRECTION THE
WIND IS BLOWING?
Its
effects on the
face
Trees
Dust and Smoke
Flags (all ranges fly
a red warning flag)
WIND STRENGTH
The amount to aim off is determined by the
strength of the wind
With the Cadet GP Rifle only two types of wind
need to be worried about.
FRESH WIND (10Km/hr) - A fresh wind will make
bushes and small trees move, and can be felt on
the face. Range flags will stand halfway out from
the pole.
STRONG WIND (20Km/hr) - A strong wind has a
bigger effect on tree tops and lifts dust off dry
ground. Range flags will strain away from their
poles.

WHERE TO AIM IN WIND
When Aiming Off for wind there are three Points of Aim
you need to know. Which way the wind is blowing
depends which side of the target is your POA:
1st Point of Aim
2nd Point of Aim
3rd Point of Aim
The 1st POA is in
between the centre
and the edge of the
target.
The 2nd POA is on
the edge of the
target.
The 3rd POA is one
targets width away
from the centre of
the target.
WHERE TO AIM IN WIND
In windy conditions, at ranges of greater than 100
metres, the following POAs should be used:
1st Point of Aim
2nd Point of Aim
3rd Point of Aim
Fresh Wind 200 metres. POA is halfway between the
centre and edge of the figure target. This is the first POA.

figure target. This is the second POA.

ANY
QUESTIONS?
QUESTIONS
What Types of wind are there?
Fresh Wind and Strong Wind
How can you tell which direction the wind is
going?
Its effects on the face, tree, flags, dust and
smoke
What does POA and MPI stand for?

SUMMARY
It is important to aim off for wind and to apply
the miss drill and know you know what they are.
Future live firing will provide practice and
confirmation for this lesson and begin the build
up of experience for all future shooting.
