Chris’s Reusable Card Game Chris Pegler Instructions This set of cards was developed as a resource to use at the Association of National Teaching Fellows Symposium, 9-10 May 2011. Reuse of digital online resources is the basis for Chris Pegler’s National Teaching Fellowship project. This resource, as part of the ORIOLE project was funded through Chris’s NTFS award. • The blue cards are on a general theme of MOTIVATION – what leads to reuse or discourages it. • The grey cards are on a theme of TECHNOLOGY – how this may affect reuse • The pink cards are on a theme of QUALITY – how this affects use decisions The ‘game’ can be played one-on-one or as a group sorting activity. Lots of debate/discussion potential. The images used in these cards are released under creative commons licenses. Please preserve their attributions. You are free to adapt the images and the cards. To do this use ‘Ungroup’ option so that you can change the text or swop images. Let Chris know if anything comes from your particular reuse or if you have comments on this particular resource. [email protected] NOTE: These cards are formatted to print as Moo.com Business Cards. Save as pictures and upload on Moo site. Purpose Concerns Quality Technology Resources 13. METADATA Machine readable description to help identify resources. But humangenerated metadata is a chore to generate. EXCLUSIVITY Is it popular or exclusive? Are ‘top ten downloads’ resources to focus on or avoid? Do we need to know where else it is being used? 25. BRAND Is it offered by a trusted provider, e.g. MIT? From a well-known collection? Is ‘brand’ a sufficient indication of quality? Purpose Concerns Quality Technology Resources An automatic habit for all requiring no special thought. Is this what we need for reuse to happen on a large scale? CUSTOM/HABIT 14. MOVING ONLINE Use of existing online resources helps to move institutions online rapidly. But is that really a desirable solution? Purpose Concerns Quality Technology Resources 26. STYLE/TONE Reuse offers a diversity of tone and style to create variety and freshness. Or does this just confuse our students? Purpose Concerns Quality Technology Resources Purpose Concerns Quality Technology Resources 15. DISCOVERABILITY Searching for a resource to use needs to be easy. But is Google really the place to start? Do we need to develop our search skills? SHARING IS GOOD The ethos of education is to share learning. Can open content be a sound investment as well as the right thing to do? 27. APPEARANCE Presentation can be part of the appeal. The resource looks better than ones we made. Overall, how important is appearance? Purpose Concerns Quality Technology Resources Purpose Concerns Quality Technology Resources 16. GRANUALITY Does size matter? Is it easier to reuse small bits of content (assets), or is it preferable to search for big, significant resources? Purpose Concerns Quality Technology Resources By Meer http://www.flickr.com/photos/meer/172210681/ By Bruce Fingerhood http://www.flickr.com/photos/springfieldhomer/39079430/ By rofltosh http://www.flickr.com/photos/atomicbartbeans/71575328/ 4. PERSONALISATION Reuse allows use of more resources, which equates with more choice for students. Is there a downside to this? 28. MY COMMUNITY If I belong to a community already, then is this the best place to look for great reusable resources? Or would I miss something? FUNDING If funding is available to get involved in using, making or sharing resources, then perhaps that is reason enough to get involved? 17. RELIABILITY Linking to an external site to use its resources is convenient. But will the links always work when you need them to? Purpose Concerns Quality Technology Resources 29. QUALITY CHECKS Some collections/ repositories offer quality assurance. Others leave it to users to decide. Is QA necessary? Purpose Concerns Quality Technology Resources Purpose Concerns Quality Technology Resources 18. CONTEXT-FREE One theory is that stripping out contextspecific information makes resources more easy to reuse. What do you think? POLICY There has been support for reuse and ‘sustainable elearning’ in various policy documents so far. Does this go far enough? 30. PERSISTENCE Learning to use a new repository takes time. Is knowing it will be around and maintained far into the future important? Purpose Concerns Quality Technology Resources Purpose Concerns Quality Technology Resources 19. LICENSE TO USE Open licenses (e.g. Creative Commons) let resources be used without need for rights clearance. Is content you need open licensed? Purpose Concerns Quality Technology Resources By Gubatron http://www.flickr.com/photos/gubatron/185631878/ http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:LuMaxArt_Gold _Guys_With_Creative_Commons_Symbol02.jpg By Wayan Vota http://www.flickr.com/photos/dcmetroblogger/3298543398/ 7. LEARN NEW STUFF Does working with other people’s stuff offer effective development? Or would you miss the creative thrill of making your own? 31. RATINGS Reviews and ratings are popular in ecommerce. How far can you rely on these when choosing between resources? CUTTING COSTS Reusing resources or assets made elsewhere should cut costs. Does it? Or are there ‘hidden’ costs in reusing resources? 20. ADAPTABLE Lego allows reuse of one component with others to make new ones. It’s based on a standard. Is this important to reusability? Purpose Concerns Quality Technology Resources 32. KNOWN CREATOR Is knowing who made the resource important in selection? Are there lots of brilliant resources by unknowns out there to find? Purpose Concerns Quality Technology Resources Sometimes it’s the ‘only one’ available. If this is the case would you reuse and be prepared to compromise? If so, on what? RARITY 21. INNOVATION Resources which make innovative use of technology can be difficult to produce. Is this is a good reason to reuse them? Purpose Concerns Quality Technology Resources 33. RESEARCH-BASIS Is it necessary to have links to relevant research? Or even proper referencing? Do resources used need to evidence scholarship? Purpose Concerns Quality Technology Resources Purpose Concerns Quality Technology Resources By Martin Kliehm http://www.flickr.com/photos/martin-kliehm/2327822407/ By Adam_T4 http://www.flickr.com/photos/adam_t4/3121511810/ By Jaason Michael http://www.flickr.com/photos/jasonmichael/5396824640/ 10. UP TO DATE? Is it important to have the most up-todate version? Do you expect the creator to keep it up to date? Or once shared is their job done? 22. INTER-OPERABLE Do you expect resources to ‘plug and play’ into your own VLE? Would having to reformat it be a significant turn-off and deter reuse? Purpose Concerns Quality Technology Resources 34. PROVED IN USE Some reusable resources are new creations. Others adapt resources already used with students. Does this matter? Purpose Concerns Quality Technology Resources Purpose Concerns Quality Technology Resources 23. ACCESSIBLE Making accessible resources requires skill. Do collections of resources help improve support for disabled students? CONVENIENCE Access to resources online is now so convenient it can replace using your own HEI’s resources. Is there a downside? 35. DESCRIPTION Can the description provide all the information you ever need to decide to use it? Would a poor description put you off? SPEED/TIME Do you need a resource fast? Don’t have the time to make one? Do you search and reuse? If so, does time searching really pay off? 24. REPURPOSEABLE Repurposing a resource can just be about making the resource look how you want it to look. Is this facility important to you? Purpose Concerns Quality Technology Resources 36. NEW/IMPROVED Is reuse a way to update and improve your teaching? If so are you attracted to easy means of updating? E.g. RSS: Purpose Concerns Quality Technology Resources
