Historia de Argentina
Around 10,000 B.C., there were approximatly
20 indigenous groups living in the area that
is today Argentina.
 Spanish explorer Juan Díaz de Solís arrived
in Argentina in 1516 quickly making
Argentina a Spanish land.
 In 1816, Argentina won independence from
Spain and became prosperous during the
1800s as a wave of European immigrants
from Germany, Italy, and England arrived.

Historia de Argentina
Between 1857 & 1939 3.5 million people
immigrated to Argentina from Italy, Spain,
Germany, English, Switzerland, Austria,
Norway, Syria and many more places. By
1914, 30% of the Argentinean population
was born in another country.
 From 1976-1983, Argentina was under
military rule.
 Today, Argentina has a democratic
government

Immigrant Influence



Spanish spoken in Argentina is very different from
that of Spain.
Each region has its own dialect
Argentine Spanish is also heavily influenced by
Italian.
 People often greet each other with the Italian buongiorno
rather than buenos días and will say ciao for goodbye.
 The Tú form is rarely used and is replaced by the
Argentine vos.

Another completely unique language is called
lufardo, a mix of many immigrant languages build
around castellono, which allows people of diverse
backgrounds to communicate.
Argentina

Capital: Buenos Aires
 Located at the mouth of
the Rio de la Plata on the
coast of the Atlantic Ocean
 The people of Buenos
Aires are known as “Los
Porteños”
 Avenida 9 de Julio is the
world’s widest street. It is
425 feet wide and has 7
lanes in each direction. It
is named for Argentina’s
Independence day, July
9th.

Nuclear Power




Located 70 miles north of Buenos Aires,
Argentina’s 1st nuclear power plant at Atucha
was built in 1974 and handles approximately 7%
of Argentina’s power needs.
During the 1980s & 90s, more nuclear plants
were built but the disposal of waste became a
problem.
Construction of a nuclear-waste site began in
1986 but quickly met opposition as citizens
became angry and concerned about during
nuclear waste near their homes.
The project has been delayed until 2030
meaning the disposal of nuclear waste remains
a problem today.
