NATIONAL EXPORT INITIATIVE
2010 - 2015
KEY OBJECTIVE
Double exports over the next five years to
support two million
American jobs
13
“We are rebuilding an economy where we generate more
American jobs in more American industries by producing and
exporting more goods and services to other nations”
JOB CREATION IS PRIORITY
* President Barack Obama, Export-Import Bank’s Annual Conference, March 11, 2010

Our exports support millions of American jobs
In 2008, the United States:
Led the world in
service exports, which
support 2.8 million
jobs
Exported nearly $100
billion in agricultural
goods
$1 trillion of manufactured
goods, supporting more
than 1 in 5 manufacturing
jobs which pay about 15%
more than average
Every $1 billion increase
in exports supports more
than 6,000 additional
jobs
15
WHAT IS THE NEI?
A government-wide coordination to
promote exports
A plan to support and create American jobs
A critical new effort for long-term economic
growth

12-MONTH JOB PLAN
The 12-Month Job Plan is ITA’s effort to operationalize the NEI and
accomplish President Obama’s goal by:
Contributing to the
2010 stimulus effort
by emphasizing
near term jobs
through export
promotion efforts
Identifying target
exporters, markets
& sectors most
capable of rapidly
expanding exports
Prioritizing existing
programs that offer
the highest ROI,
and developing new
programs to ramp
up exports with
target companies
The Plan will be driven by ITA through all of its business units and
through the Trade Promotion Coordinating Committee (TPCC).

EXPORTS = JOBS

Jobs & New York Exports…
•
Exports Support Jobs for New York's Workers
•
Export-supported jobs linked to manufacturing account for an
estimated 3.1 percent of New York's total private-sector
employment.
•
More than one-fifth (20.9 percent) of all manufacturing workers
in New York depend on exports for their jobs. (2008 data are the
latest available.)
Jobs & New York Exports (more)…
•
Exports Sustain Thousands of New York Businesses
•
A total of 27,329 companies exported goods from New York
locations in 2007, the third highest number among the 50 states.
Of those, 94 percent, or 25,657 firms, were small and mediumsized enterprises (SMEs), with fewer than 500 employees.
•
SMEs generated more than half (55 percent) of New York's total
exports of merchandise in 2007. That is the third highest
percentage among the 50 states and well above the national
average of 30 percent.
Jobs & New York Exports (more)…
•
New York Depends on World Markets
•
New York's export shipments of merchandise in 2009 totaled $57.3 billion.
New York was the third largest exporter among the 50 states in 2009.
•
The state's largest market in 2008 was Canada, to which New York exported
goods worth $11.1 billion. This was 19 percent of the state's total exports that
year. Canada was followed by the United Kingdom ($4.5 billion), Israel ($3.7
billion), Switzerland ($3.3 billion), and Hong Kong ($3.0 billion).
•
New York's leading manufactured export category is miscellaneous
manufactures, which alone accounted for $12.4 billion, or 22 percent of the
state's total export shipments in 2009.
•
Other top manufactured exports from New York are computers and electronic
products ($6.3 billion in 2009 exports), machinery manufactures ($5.0
billion), and transportation equipment ($5.0 billion).
